Anyone use Life of Fred? We are trying it out this year starting with Apples for my 8 year old.  Do you feel like you need to supplement with this? And also, do you just continue onto the next book, and the next one, etc. until the school year is over and then pick up where you left off for following school year? Thanks!

We have used some of them, though not all the elementary books,  I believe the idea is to go though all of the books together in one year and repeat that each year.  They are pretty short.  I would definitely supplement, even if that is simply presenting other similar problems to work through together rather than another workbook.  I know others say it’s not necessary.  My younger son used them to reinforce topics when he had  finished his MUS in April and we didn’t see the point in starting the next level so late in the school year.  My older son liked the story, but didn’t make any progress with them at all.  We are still struggling to find the right math curriculum for him.

We have used the Elementary set with my son for almost two years now, as a supplement.  He started at the beginning of grade 4 reading them on his own and doing the questions on his own.  He went through the first two or three books quickly, then did one chapter one day per week on our lighter town day.  You are supposed to keep going to the next book, in order.  In the summer break, he went through one or two books too.  At the end of 5th grade, he just finished Ice Cream and it was tough…long division and graphing.  He liked it a lot until this last book when the problems got hard.  So I won’t have him go to the next book until he gets further along in his regular math, which is CLE Sunrise.  I see LoF as a supplement to your regular math curriculum.

Up until Fractions we use it as a supplement. I think for most kids there’s not enough practice.
