Would you share your Librivox favorites?
We are currently listening to The Princess and the Goblin, and it is wonderfully done. I also plan to use Our Island Story on Librivox for next year.

We really like the Secret Garden read by Cara Shallenberg (sp???) I think that is her first name. I’m looking forward to hearing other favorites to add to our listening list.

I was mistaken. We are listening to The Princess and the Goblin on the Audiobooks app in the car, not Librivox. Sorry! The man who’s reading is wonderful, although I can’t understand his name.

Okay, I’ve done a little researching and have made a list of books and readers I’d like to listen to on Librivox. I found these readers listed as some favorites and I scrolled through and picked books I am interested in and briefly listened to their voice to see if I thought I could listen to it (I’m kinda picky about reading voice ; )
The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald, read by Andy Minter (we’ve listened to 5 chps. so far, really like it)
Uncle Remus by Joel Chandler Harris, read by Mark F. Smith
Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, read by John Greenman
Tresaure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, read by Andy Minter
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (dramatic reading) by Lewis Carroll, collaborative reading
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, read by Mark F. Smith
The Railway Children by Edith Nesbit, ready by Karen Savage
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, (dramatic reading, collaborative)
The Light Princess by George MacDonald, read by Clive Catterall

How does Librivox work? Where do you get it? What do you listen to it on?

I have three scheduled for this year… We are currently listening to The Princess and the Goblin by Andy Minter – We are into it! I scheduled it by listening to 2-3 chapters per week. Our drive into town is 8-10 minutes and that is roughly a chapter, so easy enough to do just running errands etc, but could easily be done over lunch as well.
Next is Polly Anna and then Five Children and It. I have listened to the reluctant dragon – well done and Five peppers and how they grew, this one is great until half way then the reader changes and is so heavily accented that I had to finish reading myself. Great story though! For any catholics… Priest on horseback is nicely done as well.

Librivox is a collection of books that are in the public domain where volunteers are reading and making available for free for anyone with a computer. You can download them to your computer and put them on MP3 players, burn discs, or listen on the computer. You do not have to even download to just listen, either. Here’s a link:

Some of our favorite readers are Kara Shallenburg and Mark F. Smith. We really enjoyed Black Beauty, Pollyanna (both books), Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farms (both), Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates, Little Women, Little Men, Heidi, Understood Betsy – the lady who reads that is enjoyable, too, but I can’t remember her name off the top of my head.
My oldest is talking about the Blue Fairy book – these were recommended by AO at one point and most are on librivox.
I enjoy looking for additional history and Thornton Burgess books for listening in the car and for quiet afternoons during handicrafts.
