We are currently using Getting Started w/ Latin and, although I have no complaints, I need something to add to it, like worksheets or flash cards. We are only on lesson 5, or so, but I can already tell that if we don’t use it/or review daily then we’re not retaining much.  And, I’d like to have something that goes into root words (does this program do that??  I can check myself, but just thought I’d ask).

My kids really enjoy this subject and the discussions we have.  We could use this program (GSWL) more often and I love that we do it together, but I’d like something that the dc could do on their own.  I guess I’m not crazy about only doing this orally, even though that is fun, and would like them to have something tangible, that works w/ this program.

Or, if that is what I want, am I going to have to change programs??  We haven’t gotten that far into it worry about change, but if I can use this, orally, and then something written, that would be great.

    Any ideas.

I do have English from the Roots Up that does incorporate flashcards, etc., which I could use. But, I like the look of other programs that have dvds/cds and other components.

    My dc are 14, 10, and 7

    Thanks!

You just need to keep in mind that GSWL is almost a PRE-Latin program.  It’s more a warm-up than anything else.  It covers the same material as the first four chapters in the beginning book I use (a book with fifteen chapters a  to do that now or later is up to you.  I did use GSWL with my youngest for a few months as a non-intimidating beginning (he had been kind of put off by his older brothers’ talent with Latin and was afraid to try) but really just hoped that he would come away with it with a few basic principles.  The vocab I could work on later, once we had the info for the entire paradigms.  I personally find it very hard to memorize the endings while only being given a little bit at a time–I think they are best learned all at once, myself, although I can see why it is less scary to just learn, say, first-person singular or something.  But I’d just rather get a declension and learn those endings, then get another declension and learn those, etc.

Another thing that has come up in recent conversations with a Latin beginner–you might consider investing in a good dictionary soon.  The glossary in GSWL will not get you far and all followup programs do not seem to have good glossaries available.

Thank you.  I guess the name does say it all, “Getting Started…..w/ Latiin.”  Ha ha.  So, this book is good for awhile, but if we want to dig deeper, we’ll have to get something else, right??

And, any dictionary suggestions??  I’m certain we do not have a really good dictionary.

    Thanks!
