Hello, I wanted to know if you could help me? We are a blended family and have one of our own on the way, we have 6 six kids, age ranging from 14, 11, 10, 8, 7, 4. We have taken them out of public school knowing that is what God wanted us to do. We started to hm sch at the end of last year, we ordered the My Father’s World not knowing what else to do with a large family, but we have heard from friends that it was good for big families to start there. Well we liked it but now this year I thought that I would do more hands on with them, I’m not talented at all in any way, so we again ordered the Robinson Curriculum have you heard if that was good for a large family? Iv’e been looking all day at the Charlotte Mason web sight and I wanted to know about how it all works with multiple grade levels? I sure hope that you would be able to help us out, I really would like to put more Bible into there every day life. Well I hope to hear from you soon. Take care. God bless, Heather.

While I cannot speak to using Robinson curriculum or MFW, I do know that quite a large amount of your Charlotte Mason work can be done together.  You can use the ideas offered here on this site, or you could use a history like Truth Quest, quite successfully.  Bible can easily be done together thru simple reading, drawing, discussion, and copywork. I would like to recommend Sonya’s “PLanning your Charlotte Mason Education.”  She walks you through the whole planning process and helps you figure out which subjects to do together and how often to do each subject.

I usually just use the bus-stop idea;the youngest gets off the bus first and the oldest stays on longest.  The youngest, like your 4, just listen, and get an occasional book from library that fits their age range.  Maybe some coloring or drawing, too.  The seven might narrate or dictate to you, and copy a few sentences.  About the same for the 8, maybe an extra few sentences.  The 10, 11, can write their own work, create their own projects or lapbooks.  The 14, you can have much higher expectations from.  No matter what, they all need to do their own math, reading/LA/grammar/composition, and perhaps spelling depending upon your curriculum choice.  Much of History, Bible, Science, art, music, etc can be done together.  But since you have several who are so close in age, you could combine them for things like language arts, grammar, composition, and spelling.    Hope of this encourages you!

I would say if you can navigate posting on a website forum (something it took me a while to figure out!) and are brave enough to follow God to homeschool many children who are not used to being homeschooled and come from different families, that you have many MANY talents.  I do not use MFW but many friends do and love it and use it with multiple grade levels, I am not sure exactly how that works but I am told it is CM friendly.  I too would suggest the planning series here, there are old blog posts that explain it well and you get there from the homepage.  One of the most important thing I have learned being a mom for ten years is that you have to do what works best for your family, regardless of what other people are doing.  Pray and continue being so brave, you will do great!  And any questions you have that come up you can post here, I get the best help.  God Bless!
