I asked recently about English Lessons through Literature, and I almost purchased it. I really liked it, but wasn’t fond of some of the lit selections. ANyway, I found that MFW prints an updated(?) version of some older LA lessons, and they are really great! Its called Language Lessons for TOday. I’m sure you ladies have heard of it. There are other similar products, but for some reason, this one really appealed to me. I’ll be using the grade 4 book with my 3rd and 4th graders next year.

This is where I’m at!  We’ve been using Language Lessons for Today.  I like it fine.  Maybe we don’t work enough in it.  But I have felt there’s not enough writing.

Just discovered English Lessons through Literature.  I like this idea.  It appears to be comprehensive.

We do writing through written narrations starting in 4th grade, move from oral narrations to oral and written (I write for them) and then into I start writing the narration as they dictate to me, and then they finish the written narration. It is a process through 4th grade and by 5th grade they start doing written narrations a couple times/week. We don’t do formal writing before that because my kids need more time to develop spelling skills so that spelling is easier as they write their narrations and I don’t want them to get “dinged” for every misspelled words or create habits of spelling incorrectly consistently.

They are writing doing copy work and move into dictation in 4th grade, so hand writing skills are growing even if they are not actually writing a lot.
