I am trying to come up with Christmas gifts for the child in our family who has read everything under the sun. I am wondering if the Lamplighter Publishing books would be considered good, living books, or twaddle? Has anyone out there tried them?

These are hands down some of the absolute BEST literature I have ever read!!!! Wonderfully character building. Sir Malcolm and the Missing Prince, Ishmael, The hidden Hand, Nobody Loves Me, Charlie’s Choice, The Robber’s Cave – Fabulous living books!

ETA – the audio dramas are terrific, too!

I like them and  I have recommended them.  I agree with missceegee that they do have a good message, but I’m going to risk the group’s ire and criticize them a bit.  They are somewhat predictable and I find most of the characters in them to be one-dimensional, in other words, all good all the time or all bad all the time. While reading them I have been known to roll my eyes and say, “Seriously?”   Now, go back and read my first sentence.  I would still recommend them, but a steady diet would make me ill.

    ducking,

I’ll admit that SOME of the books have one dimensional characters as Jeaninpa mentions, but I still really enjoy them. Sir Malcolm is not one sided Hugh goes through a total change. Others as well.

No need to duck, Jeaninpa. Different perspectives are a good thing.

I LOVE some of the Lamplighters.  And a few others I’ve regretted spending the $$ for.  I think it depends.  In a few of them that we’ve read, the moral message overwhelms the literary quality so that what you really get is a strongly worded sermon dressed up in a little “storyline costume”.  But some of them we still talk about, many years after reading them–that is a living book.

You don’t have to duck, jeaninpa, I’ll step right up and say it—I DON’T LIKE HENTYS.  LOL  And I call myself a homeschooler!!!!  There, now maybe the tomatoes will get aimed at me!!

    Love some! Others, yawn…

With you on Henty, Bookworm. Costly Ugh at our house.

I do like the way Lamplighter books look on a shelf whether they are a favorite literary work of art, or just a dressed up sermon. ;0)

Our family thoroughly enjoys them, even my husband, who doesn’t like corny things. He really gets into the dramas and even desires to seem them acted out in person…I believe they have a live theature in OH area? We listen to the dramas when we travel. I am pleased they are Christ centered!

Well, we are in the same camp…we tried to listen to a Henty audio, by Jim Weiss, and *I* couldn’t finish it. I didn’t even bother asking the kids 🙂 It could’ve been that it was “out of our time period” and I just didn’t get it and we will try it again, and we’ll see how it goes next go around.

The Lamplighter’s are great audios, we enjoy them every 2-3 months. Some are predictable but so far my dc don’t know that means, or at least haven’t said anything. My oldest has several hard copies but still prefers to listen to them, don’t quite know why. I think the acting/music is great (especially compared to others we’ve listened to) and my dc really do get into the stories, practically begging for more. Could be that we don’t listen to one after the other, don’t know.

*Confession: I didn’t really care for Story of the Ancient World, or whatever it’s called, by Christine Miller, ducking, ducking, ducking….Started out loving it, ended up shelving it. I plan to read some to myself to figure out what the deal is with that book.

There, now you don’t need to feel bad, jeaninpa.
