The past few posts about ebook sales and kindles on sale have got me thinkin’…

    Maybe I might like ebooks!?!

So, looking at them for the first time…

    Which one is good?

I know I want a no-frills (not the kindle fire!) type, BUT I do like the touch screen and lit screen.

So, is kindle really the best brand or is there any other readers that might be good to look into?

    Thanks for the help!

    Forgot to post my Questions:

Do any of them offer the ability to listen to audio books?

Nooks do not allow you to buy from amazon?

Is the light feature and touchscreen that big of a deal?

    Thank you!!

    🙂

The light is important to me for in bed reading. It allows you to go without an extra light and works well on our kindle paperwhites. The paperwhites does NOT have audio function, but my dad’s kindle keyboard does. I’m not sure about the sale ones.

Where do yo like to buy books? I buy books from amazon 90% of the time, so using their product in addition to the kindle app on my iPad/iPhone makes the most sense. Also bc I have amazon prime, I can borrow books from amazon like a library.

    Just my 2 cents.

I buy usually from amazon if not locally at thrift stores. 😉 I don’t have a prime account, but might look into it if/when I begin to read e-books more. So you are not able to use the nook with amazon purchases? That is a pretty big deal I think. So, the keyboard kindle does not have a light, correct? I have been looking at the paperwhite and it looks like one of the best. None of the paperwhites have audio? Seems like it would just make sense. But maybe because our library combines downloadable audio and ebooks together that I am thinking that.

We are thinking about moving to a new state and when I look at the hundreds of books I have it starts to feel overwhelming. I am thinking maybe going digital might not be so bad. Lol! I am actually looking at getting the Neat Receipts or scanning all of my paperwork too! Some people actually live like that! It amazes me. Lol 🙂

I understand the stress of thinking about moving books. My library at home is 5,000 volumes and growing. Just thinking of moving is stressful !

You are a lady after my own ♡! Lol

I have been wondering what my count is…I really have no idea. I have a total of 7 bookshelves scattered around the house and there are always some laying by our bedsides and couches, etc. It would be interesting to know how many total we have. 😉

I bought myself a nook thinking it would be cheaper. However, some of the files I transferred on there (pdfs) read funny, have content rearranged, etc. It fills up quickly on those pdfs, so I sometimes have to delete a file from the nook to add something else. And I see all the stuff that is free for kindle and want to kick myself. Oh, well.

I have a kindle fire and it can play audiobooks – but usually when I am listening to audiobooks I am on the move (doing chores) and the fire is too big to carry around comfortably. I use my ipod with earbuds to listen to audiobooks more than any other device. When we listen as a family I usually play them over my computer. The kindle fire does not have good enough speakers to make the volume loud enough for me and all the kids to follow an audiobook in a big room. You can hear it if you are holding it, but not if you get too far away with any ambient noise in the room. The kindle fire (and other kindles too probably) have a feature that will read a book aloud to you if you have the kindle ebook – it is a computer voice but it doesn’t sound too bad. A good feature for a kid to read a book a little above their level – follow along with the voice.

I love the lit screen – I turn the brightness down very low and read at night without disturbing anyone 🙂

Also – see if your library has a program to loan ebooks – depending on what kind of reader it supports, you can save a lot of money borrowing from your local library, and that might offset some of the cost of an upgraded ereader. My library has not only new books/bestsellers, but any classic in the public domain you can think of, all nicely formatted for my kindle.

Thank you for your replies. Looks like the nook is out of the question. I was looking at it because of price too, but if I am going to have problems with it, I would rather not deal with that. As for the Kindle Fire, it just seems so distracting. We have tablets already in our house, so I really just want a simple reader. I am thinking about just going with the cheap one that…of course…was on sale YESTERDAY! lol oh well, I’m sure there are other deals out there.

Thank u again for the help. 🙂

nerakr, I appreciate you sharing your experiences with the Nook. I’ve been wanting/eyeing the Kindle Paperwhite for over a year now, but just haven’t had the money for it. The Nook seemed like maybe something to consider with the built-in light, etc. But we are a devoted Amazon already so that was my biggest hangup there. However, your experiences will keep me from continuing to cast my eyes in the Nook’s direction. 😉

If the Paperwhite had audio, it would be perfect!

Mysterious Lady in Pink: “If the Paperwhite had audio, it would be perfect!”

My thoughts exactly! Still jumping back and forth between the cheaper version kindle and the paperwhite…can’t justify spending 50+more jjust for it to light up. It does have the touch screen, but is that a huge deal?? Idk.

we’ve had several kindles at our house – the keyboard one (with a lighted cover), the touch (with a lighted cover) and now a Paperwhite. I must say the Paperwhite is much worth it IMO! I have an iPad that we use for things that only the iPad can do and have looked at a few color books on there, but my son and I still much prefer our Kindles for reading books that are just books. We’ve done the audiobook thing on his Touch a few times, but don’t miss it on the Paperwhite. It’s kind of a cumbersome device for an audiobook anyway. We just use an iPod or all listen on the stereo for those.

where we find the light the most helpful is in the car and in bed at night – it’s worth the extra for us!

    Hey mjemom – just a heads up….

My kindle keyboard’s lighted case (official Kindle) started reseting my kindle recently.  You’d be sitting reading, and the Kindle would restart.  When I took it out of the case, it worked fine.   We have had the case for 3 years with no prior trouble.

HOWEVER, there is a design defect that causes this to occur.  It happens more in the similar non-light covers (and that started showing up right in 2010 when they were new…) but it does sometimes occur with the lighted case.  I suspect it is more a position of “when” will it occur rather than an “if”.

In 2010 Amazon said they would refund these cases forever.  I didn’t mention that while talking to the amazon reps (had forgotten about the issue, but was googling while chatting to amazon and remembered hearing all about it in 2010) – and when the amazon representative determined it was the case, they said it would be refunded because it was defective.  (That is why I have credit with them right now….)

Just thought you would like to know, just in case it does start acting up.   Unfortunately they don’t sell (new) that type of case anymore – not one that fights the Kindle Keyboard – so now I’m out a light….

IMO the light is crucial. I don’t want extra book lights if I can help it.
