I have just listened to the audio of laying down the rails and I have a question.  Sonya suggested that we sit down the older kids and get them on our side so to speak with regards to any particular habit that we feel we need to work on.  I have a 3 yr old dd, a 5 yr old ds and a 7 yr old dd.  Should I sit them all down and tell them what we want to work on and what steps will be taken to form this habit and break the old ones or should I just talk to the oldest?  Then, if I don’t talk to the younger ones do I basically just “spring it on them” in terms of changing concequences etc.?  Should they have some sort of warning about what is going to be changing?

I may have more questions as I get deeper into the book! Embarassed

I definitely would tell all 3 the changes you are going to implement.  I tell my 18 month old things, and I am constantly amazed by what she really can understand.  By 3, they should know a lot of the time when they are not behaving as they should.  You may have more rebellion from the younger two if they dont fully understand the changes.

After we had our 3rd child I always told my oldest son to get the door, because it was easier trying to get the stroller in and diaper bags.  Now at 9, a friend commented on how awesome it is to see my 9 year old hold the doors for women and children.  I rarely have to ask him, it just became Habit.  It is so awesome to see the results of Habit Training but it does take time.  Sometimes I can be impatient wanting to see the changes immediately and often falling off our new path, but keep getting back on and with prayer you can change your household into one more pleasant.  Right now we are working on Attitude.

Thanks for your advice!  I was feeling this was the right way to go anyway, I just needed a confirmation I guess!  My husband is really wanting to make some changes as well but hasn’t read the book or listened to the audio and is basically relying on  what I have gleaned from the book and share with him.  I am still in the process of “making new plans” so to speak and have not quite worked out exactly how things will happen yet. All I know for sure right now is that we are going to work on attention first! It was kinda hard to choose a habit at first because there are a few others that are pretty tempting to deal with right now ( cleanliness, orderliness, attitude, to name a few).  But we definatlly need to lay down a good foundation first.  I have been having health issues for such a long time and having to have others take the kids or at the very least be in our home helping with them, that a lot of the habits and routines we had started forming seemed to have been uprooted!  I’m not even all the way back to full health yet and we are needing to start from scratch in a lot of these areas!  Anyway, thanks for the advice and the confirmation!  God bless!  -Miranda
