I noticed under the suggestions for Language Arts in the SCM curriculum guide that JAG Mechanics was not suggested.  Could someone explain whether SCM finds mechanics benefitial or unnecessary.

    Thank you

It is very helpful to learn mechanics; however, it is hard to find a program that does not teach them by displaying incorrectly capitalized and punctuated sentences. Most programs give wrong examples for the student to correct. Charlotte Mason was very concerned with making sure the students saw the correct versions of word spellings as much as possible, and I’m thinking that principle applies to puncutation and capitalization as well. So I’m hesitant to recommend a course that incorporates incorrect examples for the student to see. I would much rather find a program (or write one) that encourages the student to study correct examples, be able to give the reasons for each mechanic aspect in it, and practice using them correctly.

Thank you so much for your response.  Even though I meant to say “does SCM find JAG mechanics beneficial…,” your response gave me the answer I was looking for.  I figured mechanics was something you felt was important… lol
