I have 7 children and my sixth child is quite a spit fire!  🙂  She is very determined and driven!  Almost every day she sits at the table and asks to do school!  So while we aren’t doing anything formal next year, I will be slowly teaching her letters and some letter sounds as she has already been asking about various letters and their sounds. 🙂  She will also be doing nature study along with everyone else.  Our other children will be doing, Journaling a Year in Nature.  I know my 5 year old is going to insist on having a nature journal like all the big kids.  Would you do a more simplified journal for her or let her have one just like everyone else?  I have the digital file so making one more copy isn’t an issue.  Any recommendations?  Thanks in advance.

There is not a right or wrong answer to your question.  You know your daughter best.  I would be inclined to give her a simple sketchbook and perhaps use the Nature Notebook as something to look forward to once she is reading well, or something for her first formal year of school.

I have 10 kids – isn’t it amazing the different personalities?! When I have a child asking to ‘do school’ I create a bin with all sorts of learning activities and materials for them. On days they ask to do it, we pull it out. On days they don’t, I pretend it doesn’t exist.

For the nature notebook – I would print some of the pages for her, but not all. Then if she fills those up, add more. 😉

    Thank you for your feedback!

Yes, Tamara, I think you are right!  A simple sketch book will suffice.  The Journaling a Year in Nature will be a nice thing for her to look forward to.

Tristan, it is fascinating to see so many personalities, isn’t it?!  I do have coloring pages with some alphabet letters on them!  She LOVES to color!  I will have some things like that for her to sit down and “work on” while she is at the table with the rest of us.  She also sits and listens to read alouds and living books for science and history with the other kids.  I know she is picking up so much!  She also hangs out with us for picture study and listens to our composer time too!  I think a special sketch book with a  special message and drawing from mommy on the first page might be just be the ticket with this little spit fire of mine 🙂
