Has anyone read James Herriot’s series to their families? what ages were your children? We have the children’s story book of his. I have fond memories of watching the t.v. show when I was little, but I never read them so I don’t knw what the reading level is.

    Thanks,

    Rachel

James Herriot can be a tough read mostly because of the Yorkshire culture. The books are written in the local vernacular which includes quite a bit of language which most would deem inappropriate. There is also quite a bit of relaxing in pubs after a tough job on a farm. The stories are still very much worth reading as they really give a good picture of small town life in England during the early 20th century. Besides, James Herriot was a master storyteller.

The stories can be enjoyed read aloud around 6th grade or so and up. The reader will have to do some “on the fly” editing of the language. It is perfectly okay to tell the children that what was said was inappropriate and move on. The main story will not be ruined by skipping bad language. Oh, and be prepared to have your kids laugh at your attempts to read the Yorkshire English. My kids got a big kick out of my poor attempts to do so. 🙂

I have read James Herriot’s Treasury for Children to my dd6. She loves the stories, and the illustrations are lovely. It’s actually a book I am thinking of buying for her because I think she will enjoy rereading it. (I enjoyed the stories, too!)

    Take care and enjoy!
