I am beginning to plan our upcoming year and I’ve been eager awaiting the chance to use Jack’s Insects. My two oldest will be in 4th grade (9 turning 10 early in the new school year) and 1st grade (7 1/2 at the start of the year). I am fairly confident that my 4th grader will be able to listen to the stories and enjoy the notebook. I’d like for my 7 year old to listen in, as well, without the expectation of a notebook.

In your experience would it be better to save this for another year or so, until my younger daughter mature, or do you think she’d get something out of it? (Together they will also study GDS Heaven and Earth for “science”.) They will be in Module 2 together, with a 6 year old K’er in his own program until he learns more English, and a tagalong 4 year old.

    Thank you so much!

I am currently using the Jack’s Insects Notebook with my son (he’s 11 and wants to be an entomologist). He is doing OK with it but he thinks it would be more enjoyable to just read Jack’s Insects on it’s own and then research deeper into any insects that he is interested in without using the specific suggestions/internet links in the notebook. The notebook seems to be taking the joy out of the actual books. I am considering dropping the Notebook part of the study and just using the additional reading suggestions along with the Jack’s Insects BOOK and have him narrate them. I have an 8 year old daughter too and I know that she would enjoy Jack’s Insects and the other books mentioned in the Notebook as family reading. I also have my son draw any insects he finds in his Nature notebook and he enjoys doing so.

Great food for thought. Thank you. Hmm, I’m wavering between The Storybook of Science and Jack’s Insects. I think I might try Jack’s Insects and buy the notebook in an ebook (if that’s an option) and see how it goes. I appreciate your insight. My girls are so into bugs it seems wise to at least give it a whirl. We thoroughly enjoyed Outdoor Secrets and the Companion.
