Is starting mid year possible?

    This is our 5th year homeschooling and we school year round. I find this allows for breathing room in our schedule for sick days, spontaneous days off, field trips, etc. I’ve always wanted to do Charlotte Mason but found it too difficult in the beginning. I’m finally at a place to try it again and am pretty excited. I’ve struggled with my kids not wanting to do school. We are using a workbook style curriculum currently and while it covers everything it is rather dry. At the end of this week we are leaving for a cross country road trip. We’ll be gone for three weeks and I’m considering ditching everything (mostly) that we are doing and starting Charlotte Mason when we get back. Due to our year round schedule it would be roughly mid year for us. Would love thoughts or advice on this. Thank you! (My kids are 10, 8, 5 and 2)

    We also school year-round and our 5 children are similar ages. Starting mid-year would be fine as long as you do not try to cram in an entire year’s worth of curriculum to 1/2 year of time. I hope that makes sense!

    The seasoned mama’s always say ease into it.  Can you try some of the ideas on your trip? For example, start a history read-aloud, an especially good one, and ask them some gentle narration prompts (not to sound schoolish but rather exposing them to the idea and just creating fellowship over a good book).

    Or try observing nature on your drive.  Take walks if doable.

    Listen to composer or learn a hymn while driving.

    Otherwise, at home add a new subject each week if possible.  And remember to be patient bc it is very different than any of the other workbook material they were using.

    Thank you. I have a Beautiful Feet Books collection we could use on the trip. We already study hymns as part of our morning routine. I don’t want to cream a whole year into half a year so perhaps we’ll incorporate some CM methods into what I have already (mainly the Beautiful Feet) and go from there. The subject they dislike the most of language arts, which in our current curriculum is the workbook style. I think I could do the narration, dictation, etc with the books we have and start with some SCM resources in the Fall.

    LauraNThree;

    I think your plan is great!  I am excited for you and have a similar story myself.  I loved the idea of Charlotte Mason and when I first started homeschooling was just intimidated by it. I didn’t feel I could accomplish it in my home.

    For encouragement, my kids definitely responded well to CM style (We did Classical Conversations and math/reading curriculum for first two years of homeschooling) after we switched from workbook/memorizing type learning.  My kids were starting to dislike learning/school.  This is why I switched.

    I am excited for you!  You will find so much support and information on this site when you need help, stumble, or run into something you can’t figure out on your own.  You are not alone.:-)  You can do it and I have no doubt your children will like the change.  It will be a transition, but when learning becomes an atmosphere and not a ‘chore’, I think most kids thrive!

    Blessings,

    Renee

    Thank you Renee. I’m sorry I did not respond sooner, been busy getting ready for our road trip. I’m in a hotel surrounded by sleeping Family! Lol Thank you very much for the encouragement. I’ve struggled very much wth my oldest and can see my youngers developing a distaste for learning also. I feel that God is leading me back towards CM and an hopeful it will bring positive change. Can’t wait to get back and try!
