Hi everyone, been a looooong time since I posted so I thought I’d give a really brief intro before explaining my question…

My name is Jenn and I am the happy mama to seven sweet kids, from 14yo to 7mths old. We have always homeschooled. We started out with CM methods years ago, but drifted away from it as my husband and I thought it wasn’t “schoolish” enough to be effective. Now after much frustration, we are coming back. We have been implementing a few CM ideas/methods at a time gradually over the last year and *loving* it! 🙂

My question is about the CM Organizer…is it possible to enter a custom resource to be scheduled out? For example, my kids all have a notebook that they do their copywork in, but we don’t follow a specific “copywork curriculum” — instead we choose copywork from a wide variety of resources. So I would like to just enter “copywork” or something like that. How would that work? Obviously there is no ISBN or anything like that. Or another example would be to say, work on memorizing poetry. Etc etc. How would I enter things like that?

    I hope this question makes sense… 🙂

    Hi Jenn!

Click on “Add a Resource” then in the Title field type whatever you want.  For example, we put Violin Lessons or Nature Walk in there.  Scroll down to “Divisions” and enter whatever you want there, like “Copywork.”  Then add however many you want, say 180 for the year, then “Save & Schedule.”  Hope that helps!

Another choice that I found great for daily things that aren’t specific, like violin practice…  (would work with copywork)

I create a resource called “Violin practice” with 12 divisions with a division type of Month.  Then I labeled each month for the day of the month.

Each day, as we do Violin practice, I click on “Worked on”.  At the end of the month, I mark it as finished.    This allows us to not have a million little boxes marked if i have to change an older date.

Oh, that’s a great idea!  I like that better.

Well, I can’t claim credit for the idea… got it from someone else on here!  LOL

I just have to add that I LOVE the Organizer!

My free trial was up 3 days ago so, of course, I had to subscribe.  What I was doing/using (my own thing) has not been used/missed since I began using the Organizer.  When my free trial was up I told my husband that I don’t know what I’m going to do tomorrow if I don’t subscribe.  Well, the techy guy that he is, and firm believer in what ‘helps’ me hs the boys is always worth the money, told me to subscribe.  I would’ve anyway, but it’s nice to have him know that I have found something so valuable to us:)

Didn’t mean to hijack this thread….but I just had to share.

@ my3boys: that’s not hijacking, that helps me decide if I want to continue to try to use the Organizer! Thank you!

These are great ideas ladies, thank you very much. I am going to go try to enter some things. Suzukimom, I am not sure if I understand the way you’re doing it, but I like the idea of dividing by month… gonna go give it a try and see if it makes sense when I am looking at it. Following Cindie’s advice I already have my copywork almost finished scheduling out – thank you!

Well, it makes it neater to have “Worked On” during the month instead of trying to estimate how many times per year you might do a nature study or music lessons or gymnastics.  I just revamped mine while my girls were getting ready.  Smile

For example, the “Divisions” would be whatever, say, music lessons.  Then schedule, say, 12 divisions for the “months.”  I typed “March 2011” for the first field, then continue on down for however many months you want to add now.  You can always add more later.  This way I click only “worked on” after the lesson until the end of the month when I click finished.  You will have a record of all days “worked on” as well as a finished resource at the end of the month.  Fewer iittle check marks on your report.

I didn’t put the year in my month names – so I can reuse the resource over and over.  My first month listed was the first for our school year…. but that isn’t so important now that you can change the order of a resource when you schedule it.

We have a video about adding special kinds of resources to the Organizer that you might also find helpful. You can see it at:

You guys are amazingly helpful, thank you all so much. Heading over to watch that video now. 🙂

JennNC-I’m new to the organizer, too-just a week or so-but I already can see how much better it is for us. I do have a teacher’s guide/lesson plans(using MFW this year)but have already decided to make the switch to doing my own thing for the next period of history-Exploration to 1850. I know I can do it with the SCM organizer. The price is about the same and I like the online record of what we actually did (!) sooo much better. I’ve got nature walks, picture studies, and poetry readings on the day we actually do them.(Instead of writing it in every week) I even put myself down as a student so I can track my own piano practice, drawing, and handwork.
