Okay, ladies & gents, I mentioned in another thread the consideration I’ve been giving to a particular internet filtering software. I thought I would open up a thread to comments and/or recommendations on filtering software in general.

While I appreciate accountability services, what I really need and want (especially for my 12yo autistic one who isn’t a good judge of what might be inappropriate–often out of childlike ignorance) is filtering software that will allow me to choose from levels of filtering (and clearly explains what each level covers), set a level to match each user, and where I can “allow” certain websites for each user even if the software would have blocked that particular site.

Oh, I also don’t want to have to pay a hefty monthly fee. (Of course.) I have looked into one or two that cost about $5 per month, and that’s affordable to me. But I want to hear what your experiences have been.

    Thanks,

    Sue

We use Safe Eyes which I purchased through Homeschool Buyer’s Coop in August.  I can’t remember how much it was, but it was cheaper than the advertised website price.  It is a one year subscription.  You can make accounts for different users and it’s probably easy, but at this point, all computers are operating at the same level.  You can exclude or include certain websites and it’s extremely easy to set up.  I’d encourage you to look at their website.  They can surely explain it better than I can.  We really love it (well I do, the kids and DH might not).  I will definitely be renewing when our term expires.

I have not used because my kids don’t use the internet w/o us sitting there. But I have heard the one from Focus On The Family is very good. A lot of people in our church use it and recommend it. Don’t know if it’s exactly what you are looking for but thought I would throw it out there.

We use safe eyes and it does have levels of protection to choose from (not sure what exactly they cover..we keep it set on “high”.)  However, one fault I’ve found with safe eyes is when using you tube.  It will not play innapropriate videos, but it will show the title/screenshot image of any “related” videos which are at times innapropriate. (It does protect against searching for innapropriate keywords at least, which narrows down your chances of coming across something bad.) As a mac user though, I think we are going to have to stay with safe eyes for now, as there doesn’t seem to be anything else for macs out there to my knowledge.  Overall it is still very worth it for us.  Just be prepared to have to turn it off and monitor if your child wants to look up images of birds, for example.  The “banned keywords” list is pretty extensive.

If you use a pc, I would recommend checking out the focus on the family protection or covenant eyes.  I know that covenant eyes does offer better protection when using youtube, but alas is not offering filtering for mac users (yet!)

@Sue, I forgot to say that SafeEyes will do all the things you are asking of it to do though, to the best of my knowledge.  It’s cost is $50 for the first year, but they offer a price cut when renewing (I think it was $40 the second yr?!)
