Is anyone able to give some input into IEW?  I am trying to find something to use with my 11 & 14 turning 15 year old in the fall.  Andrew Pudewa was the speaker at last year’s conference, and I tried to implement some of his writing strategies this year with limited, but encouraging success.  I really need a program to keeps us on track.  At least for a year or so.  I would be looking at the Level B Writing intensive.  Can anyone offer some feed back?  Is the program worth the cost?  Also, I am curious about the Phonetic Zoo and Learning Linguistics Though Poetry products.   These are also really expensive, but I am curious about the strategies and effectiveness.  I am hoping to purchase most of my materials for the coming year at the conference this weekend, so appreciate any input anyone can offer.

I have the poetry program and I really like it. We have used it for three years, my 9 year old has memorized the first 13 poems (which may not sound like a lot, but some of them are pretty lengthy). He also has the student continue to review the old poems so they are retained. It comes with a really informative cd that explains why this is important. I think you can listen to it free on the website. I have when she was younger we memorized them together and now it is on her independent list.

Oh and I have phonetic zoo, too. Bought it used. I think this could work well for some learners, but my daughter does not prefer this method. She was frustrated because she thought he spelled the words to quickly. She may also not be ready for it yet, I’m hanging on to it. Could work when she’s older or for a different child.

My 13YO boy used IEW this year in a co-op setting.  I was so pleased with his progress over the course of the year.

They did American History Stories Vol 1.  It was challenging for him, and he didn’t necessarily “like” it, but he learned so much about grammar, style, and organization of an essay, and his last paper was fantastic.

For us it really worked best in a co-op setting because he had to answer to a teacher.  He was able to accept her suggestions and corrections more easily than if they had come from me.  😉

My son is very black-and-white.  Because of that, I think the style of IEW was a good match for him.

Characterinkblog.com has Character Qualities Language Arts. It is more structured and Pudewa inspired.  They have separate composition programs too.

My ds11 is taking an IEW class online through CurrClick. I have no interest in personally learning the whole in depth IEW approach, so the class is perfect for us. His written narrations are progressing but this kid in particular will thrive with formulaic approach, at least for a time. The plan is one year with IEW online while also doing 1-2 narrations. I think this is best for this kid.

Thanks, ladies.  Are the DVDs chaptered?  How do you cue them up between lessons?  Is this annoying or are they easy to use.
