I was just looking at some sample schedules on SCM and it lists approx 30 mins of independent work. Aside from a math worksheet, what falls into this category? I need to work towards a little independence with my still-learning-to-read 6yos without frustrating him. Any input appreciated.

5heartsathomeParticipantHello mrsmccardell,
I just wanted to chime in on the use of the words “handwriting” and “copywork.” I do not know where your child is on the learning curve of letter formation, but I wanted to provide a gentle reminder that these are two different things. Initial “handwriting” instruction should NOT be done independently. Invest the time to teach each stroke and letter very carefully as you sit right by their side so that foundational letter formation knowledge is correct right from the start. Go as slow as the child needs!
“Copywork” comes after handwriting instruction. Slowly allow the child to gain their independence as you are confident in their handwriting skill. Only assign words to copy that match their reading abilities. Just my 2 cents…..
Lovingly,
Mollie
erin.kateParticipantMy 8yo, whom I call Year 2, has daily italics (5 min … I do observe each of her strokes), an MEP lesson (15 min), Bible devotions (15 min), and one indpendent reading (Burgess, Little Cousins, etc for 10 min plus 5 min narration).
mama_nicklesParticipantMy 2nd grader does daily math, copywork, Bible reading, science/history reading, piano, and a rotating writing assignment. It takes him about an hour.
TristanParticipantMy 1st grader does these independently:
- Math U See (other than the one lesson day per week where I teach a new concept)
- Copywork
- Scripture study
- Life of Fred
My 3rd grader does:
- Math U See (other than 1 day I teach the next concept)
- Copywork and Prepared Dictation
- Scripture study
- Life of Fred
- Geography notebook
