Independent Reading in Hist and Sci??

I have 8 kids, so I’m trying to simplify, but not neglect the basics. We have used Heart of Dakota almost all the way through with our upcoming 11th grader and our three middle boys (11,9,8.) I see some deficiencies in our oldest’s spelling/grammar/writing, so I’m trying not to neglect that with my younger kids. Because of that, we have a year heavy in LA – reading for new and struggling readers with AAR. Plus grammar and writing for the 11yo using the Essentials program through Classical Converations. We don’t do the full CC program, and this will be our first year doing it at all.

So here’s my question…how important is independent reading for a 6th grader? HOD has my 6th grader doing science on his own, which he did last year, and history on his own. I plan on covering history as a family, with Bible readings, geography from HOD, and storytime from HOD. How necessary do you think it is to have my 6th grader read his own history book, in addition to my family reading time? If I have to choose between him reading extra history or reading literature, which should I choose??

He will have lots of work through CC (but only for 24 weeks), and I don’t want to overwork him.

It really depends on your child!  For those strong readers it totally makes sense in my mind to have some independent history reading as well as independent literature reading.  (With occasional breaks between books maybe, or a nice slow and steady reading pace of a chapter per day or every other day?).  For a child who is not a strong reader I would probably alternate reading a history related book and then when that is finished they would read a literature book.

And don’t forget audio books!  Sometimes it’s okay to just listen to a book – you can even keep them to a slow pace by having them only listen to a chapter per day, just like you might have assigned them to read.  I know my kids (and myself) get more out of books on a slower pace, even though I tend to be a read a book in a day person and I have two of the eight kids like that as well.  I let them read personal reading books on any pace they want, but if it is assigned I will restrict them to reading slower.
