Hi, my name is Cindie and I’ve been lurking for a while.  I am very intrigued by Charlotte Mason’s teachings and this website in particular.  I have so many questions, I’m not sure exactly where to start.  I have two daughters (5.5 and 3).  I would really like to start them off with CM 1st grade next fall and keep them together as much as possible.  I guess my 3 year old could listen in next year when she’s 4.5?  Logistically, would I plan for my 1st grader, then have my younger one “listen in” and read to her some of her own books, too?  I bought a curriculum package for kindergarten this year; and while I am enjoying it, I think I’d like to do this for the long term.

Now, where to start.  Like I said, I bought a packaged curriculum; so I am a little overwhelmed with doing this on my own.  I’ve browsed around the SCM website and looked at the booklists, guides, etc.  Where would you start for someone who is starting from the beginning and has absolutely nothing?  I bought Karen Andreola’s “Charlotte Mason Companion” and Charlotte Mason’s six volumes, which I plan to read throughout the year; but I need a little more guidance and structure as a newbie.

My dh is willing to come with me to Longview for the All Day Seminar (bless his heart!).  Do you think I should take a deep breath and wait for this, or would you suggest something else?  Help!!!

    Blessings and thank you!

BREATHE… you are on the right track!  Although I have not attended the All Day Seminar live, I do own a copy and refer to it often.  In my opinion this is the best place to start.

Welcome Cindie!  I am new too, and have been lurking and planning for over 6mths.  We are so blessed to have this site and these wonderful people to guide us 😉

    Hi and Welcome Cindie2dds!

I agree with Leigh Ann that the All Day Seminar is the way to go. Sonya has a wonderful gift for distilling down CM into doable-ness (that’s a fun made up word, but you know what I mean Wink).

The biggest thing I tell friends new to CM is that you do not have to start with lots of books. It can become overwhelming fast if you feel pushed to get through a stack.  Don’t be afraid to drop a book if you children aren’t loving it as well. Having the kids love it is half the battle.  I would browse through the website http://www.mainlesson.com which is full of printable, living books to try out before purchasing.  I routinely print a chapter or two off and see how my kids take to it before I go and buy a copy.  It is also easier for young eyes to do copy work off a printed page than a tiny book. I routinely copy and paste chapters into Word and make the font nice and big for copywork. Once you get the methods down, and feel comfortable,  you can jump in with a bigger plan.

Oh and one more plug. My 5 year old daughter loves Beatrix Potter. They are great stories to start with for little girls or boys. Laughing
