If you do a CM Co-Op during the week, can you tell me what you do on the other days? Which studies do you tackle at co-op and which at home? I’m assuming the 3Rs at home, but what other CM-inspired studies do you do at home?

Thanks for any advice. I’m considering starting a CM Co-Op at some point in my community. I’m really trying to spend this year in prayer and planning before jumping in.

    I lead a CM co-op in Jacksonville, FL. You can learn more about us at http://www.rchajax.com. This year, we have 6 classes – nursery, Form 0 (3 to 5), Form 1 (6 to 8), Form 2 (9-10), Form 3 (11-12), and Form 4 (13+).

Our classes for the year with teachers for each subject rotating through the forms 1-4.

    • Morning Matins – assembly with everyone and we cover hymn, folk song, pledge, music theory, announcements, and a game that form 4 leads to allow little fun bits with public speaking
    • Nature Study (45m)
    • Middle East Geography using SCM Visits to Middle East & Speaking Spanish with Miss Mason & Francois (45m)
    • Artist/Composer (alt. weeks) & Poet Study (30m)
    • PE (30m)

    • Then we have an hour for forms 1-3 – Handcrafted, Discovery Science, Beyond the Playground – these classes are 8 weeks each and rotate through these forms.
    • Form 4 – Lab Science (12 weeks fall) & ____ (12 weeks spring). We had chosen photography 101, but that may change due to circumstances.

At home, my family listens to the music, displays the art print, reads poetry at least 1-2 more days, practices Spanish, and dd13 does a bit of homework for lab science.

Do take your time and pray. I didn’t start with a book study, but were I to start again I would most likely. I have a great group of families, but not all are full on CM even though everything we do at co-op is. Also, check out http://www.charlottemasonincommunity.com. It’s full of information and resources to help.

    Blessings,

I’ve been all over the RCHA site this morning, Christie. Its an excellent resource. Thank you. The information there does show me that I need to carefully consider all aspects of running a co-op.

Classical Conversations came to our town last year, and I was very tempted to join due to the outside accountability and support. However, I just didn’t agree with their philosophy. This summer I led the Living and Learning series, and it was wonderful. It was then when I realized that maybe a CM co-op would be helpful to our community.
