who would it be?  My cousin is considering homeschooling (her oldest is almost 2).  Who would you recommend other than Charlotte Mason.  While I love the ideas of Charlotte, I don’t want to turn her away by having her read the big volumes, it can be quite overwhelming 🙂

I have read books by others describing Charlotte, but that was many years ago, and I don’t remember the authors.  Ruth Beechick is on my list and all of Sonya’s free ebooks will be recommended as well.

    Who would you choose?

I am also going to recommend scm, ambleside, and well trained mind as some webs to look over as well.

Educating the Whole Hearted Child by Clarkson.

Before CM and trying to use Abeka, I read Homeschooling: the Early Years by Linda Dobson.

For CM education: I really felt the most encouragement from Karen Anderola’s book “A Charlotte Mason Companion” – she just talks and makes it so stress free and doable. I had been learning/using CM principles for a year when I started it and I enjoyed her ideas and gentle way of teaching. There is a lot in there, but it is so readable, you almost don’t realize it!

Another quick intro to practical ideas are the books by Catherine Levinson – Charlotte Mason Education and More Charlotte Mason Education.

When I started using CM for my little ones, I really appreciated SCM’s The Early Years. Such a helpful book!

I like those that have been listed and Lindafay’s site, http://www.charlottemasonhelp.com.

I also found the Bluedorn’s suggestions (tweaked according to readiness) to be helpful.

Other faves include Robin Sampson, Dr. & Mrs. Moore, and bit of Montessori.  Yes, I’ve found help all over the place.

But, the best help I’ve found is going to the Word and praying every step of the way.

My favorite 3 homeschooling books to loan out and give away are:

Educating the WholeHearted Child – Clarkson

For the Children’s Sake – Macaulay

A Charlotte Mason Companion – Andreola

    Anna 🙂

    The Child Light series:

—For the Children’s Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay (my first homeschooling book…twelve years ago)

—When Children Love to Learn by Elaine Cooper

    —Teaching Children by Diane Lopez

And I love the Clarkson’s Educating the Wholehearted Child too.

I second pianogirl363/Anna, those are my top picks too!

A Charlotte Mason Companion – Andreola

Charlotte Mason Education (? can’t remember the exact title) – Levison

and the fiction books by Andreola – Pocketful of Pinecones and Blackberry Inn.  They’re fiction, but the mother thinks out loud and is reassuring about taking baby steps and implementing a CM education one step at a time.

I re-read these books every year, I think! Especially when I want to think about new curriculum and plans for the new school year….which is usually around Jan. and Feb. — much too early for the catalogs to be out.  And yet, it’s one of my favorite things to think about!

Oy!  Macaulay!  Love her, too!  I enjoyed For the Family’s Sake even more.

Hey, Anniepeter, that’s exactly what I was going to say! So, ditto on Schafer, Clarkson, and Beechick.

And then I would add the free ebooks and SCM resources. They take all the ‘theory’ and make it practical and livable.

I have to echo what has been said:

Ruth Beechick’s The Three R’s and You can Teach Your Child Successfully

    The Three Child Light Books

I have found all these practical, doable.
