I am currently hsing a kindergartener and have a 2.5yo as well. I have been doing the bulk of “school” (except Bible and storytime) during her naptime. However, she is beginning to fight naptime; plus, I work part time and just got my schedule for next semester. Basically, most days I will either have to wake her up to take her to the babysitter or not put her down for a nap at all. How can I include her in school without distracting my highly distractable 5yo? I have a clothespin game, but I’m not sure she’s ready for it. Plus, when we have used it, the 5yo is more interested in it than she is. I”ve read other posts/blogs about this problem, but I’m not sure what will work. She does not like stickers. I’m not sure she’s old enough for scissors and glue sticks, file folder games, or lacing cards. Puppet activities would have to include the 5yo. She likes blocks, her kitchen set, playing “grocery store” with her brother, shape sorters, stacking blocks, that sort of thing. She will also sit and color or scribble; so far that’s the only constructive thing I’ve come with. Any other ideas?

    Thanks,

    Karen

BTW, she has a language delay, so at this point asking her to ID colors, shapes, etc. is out of the question.

My 19 month old loves lacing cards so I think yours could try them. She also really likes playdo, I give her a plastic knife to cut up the playdo with.  I give her a tub of water (not a lot) and let her play with measuring spoons and cups.  I always have to mop up after but it keeps her.  Same with sand.  I bought some sand and shells at the dollar store and let her play with a small shovel in a tub.  I use workboxes with the boys and I gave her her own boxes so she can go get stuff.  I change it out everyday.  I printed out a free matching game.  I cut the animal cards in half and laminated them.  Then, I made a pocket and keep the cards in the pocket.  She likes to spread these out.   She really likes puzzles, the wooden board kind have lots that are easy enough for her.  I have the connector blocks we use for math and counting, she likes to play with those.  So, while you do math with your 5 year old you could let her play along.  My oldest was easily distracted and he had to learn to deal with some distraction.  It took time but he does much better now at ignoring a screaming toddler or a brother who laughs too loud.

My now 3 yr old did or could have done these activities at your daughter’s age so hopefully it will help.

I was also going to suggest:

pipe cleaners – I bought a ton of these and keep them stored in a container. My 3 yr old LOVES these. They keep her busy for a long time. She creates easy shapes and objects. Good way to practice shapes, colors and a cheap activity.

Craft PomPoms- she likes to catergorize these by color and then count them to see how many she has of each. I found a bunch of different colors at the Dollar Tree.

Buy those paper only scissors and give her some old magazines, etc. Tell her to go through the magazines and cut out  all the…. animals…babies….red objects…etc. Keep her cut out pictures in a box for later use.

Lapbooks – about whatever your daughter is interested in. Give her the prefolded lapbook and pictures around her theme and just let her glue them to her lapbook. Print out the title of her lapbook and other words based on her theme in a font that she can color in. She can then label her lapbook. Use pictures from the above activity.

Feltboard – I made one using a piece of foamboard and covered it with felt. I printed pictures/clipart from the internet , laminated them and glued felt to the back. This is one of her favorite “school” class.

I know I have other activities that I can’t think of right now but I’ll post later when I remember  them.
