Looking for ideas for my 12 yr old daughter who wants to learn to play the guitar. She needs a self- teaching curriculum maybe a computer program? We can’t do lessons right now.
dztamraParticipantMy son has been using free online lessons at http://www.justinguitar.com The guy is British and just does short videos that cover a specific topic. My son had lessons for a short while a few years ago but never practiced, so I told him we wouldn’t pay for lessons until he showed that he really wanted them. It would be a huge sacrifice for us because money is very tight. Just as a pre-warning: there is nothing to say whether this guy is a Christian or not. He hasn’t said anything that bothered me or went against our beliefs, but my son is only around lesson 8. He does sell some products but they are optional. He just asks that you buy something to support him, if you like what he does. 🙂
I hope that helps. We have a few computer programs and things like that but my son really took to Justin’s videos. He said he liked them better than his lessons (he had 2 different teachers at certain points and he likes the videos better than either).
BookwormParticipantActually my son who plays guitar intended to do lessons and also buy some DVD instruction, but after trying things out, he ended up using Youtube. It’s free, you can tailor it to exactly what you want to learn, and he likes it better than the other options we tried or looked at. Of course, he is sixteen and I trust him online (when I am home–you know, smart-momm-trust!) Works for us and the price is right!
dztamraParticipantI did want to clarify for my post above…my son is 9, almost 10. Justin’s lesssons aren’t geared toward children but he hasn’t had any complaints.
mrskatieParticipantAlso there is a great app for the iPad if you have one called Wild Chords. It starts out teaching you your chords (and can tell if you are strumming them correctly). It even helps you tune your instrument. The initial lessons are free, but then you do have to pay for more lessons. We started using it before we discovered our daughters guitar was faulty and had to return it to the store. If/when we ever get another guitar we will probably continue to use this programm; at least for a while.
HiddenJewelParticipantLearn and Master Guitar is an option. Watch for the time of year when they slash their price about $100.
JenParticipantThank you for the ideas. I hadn’t thought about youtube, I will check that out and also http://www.justinguitar.com .
