  • ..and I have just gotten through the prefaces and the first 12 pages of volume 1. I think it is going to a long read, but now that I am getting into some of the meat of it it is really interesting.

For those of you who have read it, do you hunt and peck around or do you read it strait through?

I’m reading strait through the original. (I’ve read several CM companions in their entirety and now use them as a hunt and peck resource based on what specific need I might have that requires immediate (or semi-immediate) action.) As I read the original I can’t help but wonder where along the timeline did our language become so ‘watered down’–some days it makes me angry at the generation who didn’t think it was important enough, so now our generations are the ones suffering, thank you very much!! But then getting angry isn’t solving the problem…so I keep plugging along slowly but surely!!

I’ve done both types of reading, and both can be useful. If I am having trouble with a certain idea or practice, for example, I might hunt up relevant passages to review. But I usually read them straight through. It DOES get easier! My first time through the books, I think I tried to read 3 pages a night, and I know I didn’t “catch” everything. That’s why I reread them often. I know they are a lot of work at first, but the payoff is big!

I get very frustrated with our “dumbed down” language also. My children had some friends from London and even their language was a far step up as far as vocabulary. When they went back to England they had to catch up a great deal.

It’s sad too, because books by Jane Austen and others are so wonderful, but can be so intimidating.

I am enjoying the first volume btw. She knew how to pack a page.
