I like RightStart math but find it too time consuming for mom– any suggestions?

I have two boys, one in RightStart Level B and one in Level C. Once we got the hang of it last year, we all really enjoyed the program. However, I also have a younger child and find that between teaching math to each old son for 20-25 min, followed by teaching them each a reading lesson for 20-25 min then a history or science lesson, those go longer because of hands on activities so 30-35 min, I was asking my toddler to entertain himself or work with a brother for around two and a half hours each day.

Does that improve in Level D? I’m hoping it becomes more student directed at some point, otherwise I think we’ll have to change programs.

    Any suggestions?

We don’t use RS because of that time intensive aspect and so many children here (I’m expecting #8 and the oldest is only 11). I did want to offer some ideas though on saving time in other areas. It sounds to me like you do reading, history, and science for each of the boys separately? Is that correct? I would highly suggest combining them! For example, all my children study the same history together, listening to books read by mom, with extra books for my oldest to read on her own if needed. My children still learning to read or working on fluency read aloud at different parts of the day as it fits in lessons, or we do a group lesson and I have things for each to read. We’re together, even the littles can join in. Science is the same, my younger ones do science together usually while the oldest can have a separate topic to explore independently. She is 6th grade and the next child down is 2nd, so a big gap, but then the rest all come right in a row.

I feel RightStart is worth the time!   But I agree you can’t do EVERY subject one-on-one and it not take forever…

I believe that RS is meant to be one-on-one right through level E… and the Geometry is supposed to be done on their own (mostly.)

However… on the RS Yahoo group I have heard of parents that have handed their kids level D and E and let them teach themselves.  (not sure how that works for things like the mental math….)   It would depend a LOT on the child.

I know how you feel though – I have 2 in level C, and 1 in level A.  Right now the 2 in level C are at the same spot, but I suspect at some point I’ll need to split them (especially when we get to the drawing lessons – we only have one set of drawing equipment!)

I know just whst you mean. However we have been through many math programs that did not work for us. I do combine everything else and give independent work wherever posible. I know that R S math is worth the time. I have also heard of setting a timer and pick up the next day where you left off. This might take longer to get through the levels but at least they will UNDERSTAND Math. Combine all kids to play the games and help the younger more with it.
