I am considering using Hymns in Prose with my son to improve his reading.  I am wondering if anyone has used the teacher’s manual with the reader and what your experience with using them has been.  My son is 8.  I used Logic of English Foundations(not as written) to teach phonograms and some rules along with CM style lessons using the Treadwell Primer and First Reader.  I stopped reading lessons once he was reading about a year and half ago.  He has been reading aloud to me everyday for 15 min.  He is currently reading the last Dan Frontier reader.  He has made some progress but he still seems to struggle with bigger words and he still reads slowly.  I honestly don’t know if his reading is “normal” and will get better as he continues reading or if I should continue with some reading instruction.  Any recommendations or input would be much appreciated!  Thanks!

I am not sure about using Hymns in Prose, but I can comment on the reading progression.

In my experience bigger words, speed, and being comfortable reading will continue to develop and improve with practice and time.

So far my children have not been early readers, but they really enjoy reading. My DD is in 5th grade and reads out loud really well now. She even reads with emotion which is fun, but it took her time to get to this point. My ODS is recently 9 and he is still on the slower side, especially when a bigger word pops up, but improving month by month.

Unless you have other concerns, I would continue with him read out loud to you and just give him time to practice. Also add in a few simpler books into the mix to build confidence. To do this I had my older kids read to either the dog or younger sibling. They enjoy the easier books because it helps them build confidence, but since reading to someone who can’t read they don’t feel it is “too young”. I personally remember reading really simple books in my free time in early elementary, it was a fun break from more challenging books and really helped me get excited about reading.

Thank you Sarah for the reassurance.  I think I worry too much.  I will try giving him easier books to mix things up.   I think he would enjoy reading to the dog or maybe even our guinea pig.

    Thanks again!
