  • I’m new at this and I was just wondering how do you teach the events of history?  All the books suggested seem to be biographies or stories of individuals during the time period.  We’re going to be doing module 4 and I’m just not sure how you connect the stories to the timeline and explain how it all fits.

I think the kids make the connections naturally. We read our books (some individually and some as a family), the children narrate, once per week we add items to our Book of Centuries. That’s all we do. My 8 yo seems to be getting it though and is putting things together like where Harriet Tubman falls in relation to Ancient Rome (much later Laughing). It took a while for my brain to realize this CM way really does work, but I can heartily say it does!

Hi, im new to CM also and from other postings ive seen, some people use a “spine” book, like a history textbook or a story book that covers a span of time like George Washingtons World(covers history occuring during his lifespan). Im using these Genevieve Foster books (there are 6 in all i believe) to read from and also reading a book from the module at the same time. Some others ive seen on here are from the Baldwin Project (online free reading books), Yesterdays Classics (books to buy), some authors ive seen posted about are in this link http://simplycharlottemason.com/scmforum/topic/public-domain-recommended-books . I really wanted something to fill them in on the time era as well as use good “living books”. I bought a guide from History Odyssey(early modern: level 2 its not chrisitan based but can tweek it) to use with Module 5 (Modules 4-6 do not have guides yet from Sonya).Im using Sonyas guides for Module 1 and 2 this year with child #2 and they are great! I cant wait for the other guides to come out for the other Modules!  I hope this helps! Billiejo
