How much explanation?

    I know CM wrote that we should let children get at good books directly without a lot of “teacher talk”.  I have found that with things like Shakespeare and even the AO modern translation of Plutarch I have to work through a lot of translating in order for my children to appreciate the reading.   Are any others finding the same thing to be true with your children?  Am I interferring with my children making their own relationship with the text by explaining it to them?

    I know what you mean. Some things are really hard and when you get the blank stare you know it’s time to translate. Yet, I think it best to give an overview rather than start and stop all through the text. I really have enjoyed the study guides that AO has just for this reason. As for Shakespeare, we read a picture book, read Lamb’s, watch the movie; that sort of thing before we attempt the play. I also found that many of Plutarch’s Famous Men are also found in the Greenleaf Famous Men of Greece and Rome (but that may be cheating Undecided).

    CindyS, thanks.  We do start with Lamb’s, and that had been a great resource.
