Most public school say they do 36 weeks of school, 180 days but it does not add up. For them to do 180 days would mean school for 5 days every week which they do not do. They have many 4 days and some 3 days weeks and many half days.

I have been counting weeks and just realised we probably do more school days than the public school. Don’t tell my kids lol!! I do count field trip as school days too and we have a lot of them though so they can’t complain!!

I prefere to have 5 days weeks so we did have school on some days that most schools did not have school like Election day and such but we take the whole week off for Thanksgiving instead of doing a 3 day week and craming everything in.

How do you count how many days of school you do? do you count weeks or days?

I do 180 days and I like to do full weeks, so I plan 36 five-day weeks.  I know that schools count teacher in-service days and things like parent-teacher conference days as school days.  I think that when we lived in another state, we had to commit to 144 days on our homeschool paperwork.  I still did 180.  And yes, I do think we do more actual school days than most school.

Our school district sends us the public school’s calendar to “help us plan,” and this year they have just over 170 days of school. Last year it was 180. So I told my 9yo who happened to be sitting next to me, “Oh, there’s a good idea. They already are cramming to get more than 180 days of curriculum into a school year, so let’s cut the school year down some more.” She got that they’d now have even more homework when I asked her how they were going to fit it all in. :-/

Anyway… I plan 180 days, but it usually ends up being 365….. 😉

In Ohio 180 days is mandatory whether you are public or home schooled. If our public schools use too many calamity days (snow/inclement weather) they add days to the end of the school year. Two years ago the public schools had to make up 5 extra days in June because of massive flooding shutting down the schools. Last year we had such a mild winter that the children got every Friday off in May, plus two Mondays because they would have been over 180 days.

We do 36 full weeks. We take an entire week off for Thanksgiving also because I dont like my weeks broken up. 🙂

That’s how I plan. Although really, if having a pizza party and watching a video counts as a school day in public school, today should count for us. My kids played Scrabble, made their own Indian and Pilgrim cutouts, read for over an hour, made *snares* outside, and are about to each get 30 minutes of educational computer games.

For the public schools, a half a day counts as a day. When I used to work at a PS they would try to make those 3 1/2 hours before a snow day so they wouldnt have to make it up later. So, they might not have 180 days of full days but counting those half days they do, if that makes sense 🙂

We do at least 180, but usually end up doing more, just because learning is happening all the time!

Snow days — when we lived in another state, they could count it as a day if the buses made it to school, even if they had to turn right back around and bring the kids home because of the snow.
