I guess I’m not clear on how much reading we will do.

If we are covering Ancient Rome, I pick a few books about that (any suggestions?). Then for science we are covering anatomy and physiology, so I’m thinking we need some on different people who contributed to the growth of medicine ie Louis Pasteur, Florence Nightengale etc.

But how much reading do I suggest? A book a week? Help clarify please. My child age 12 is not a big reader, but will try hard to do what I ask. My 4 year old will need to be read to.

Are there living books related to spelling?

We also read together every evening.

    Hi, Ann. Welcome.

Are you planning to use the SCM history guide for Ancient Rome? If so, there are booklists in the sample that will show you what and when to read them. They incorporate Bible and geography as well, so you have a lesson from the guide daily, but your subjects will vary between the three. Here is a link to that if it would be helpful:

You may choose any passage from a book you want for spelling (aka prepared dictation in a CM education). SCM has a an excellent set of books here:

I have my kids read the family history lesson with me, and then they alternate days of reading living books for both science, history, as well as a literature read of their choice from my list and their scriptures. They also are reading their own sciences since they were interested in different things and are keeping a notebook about that.

Charlotte seems to have assigned a certain number of pages per day in a variety of subjects/books. It depends on your child, your needs, and the books you have selected. As Sonya says so often in reminder – teach the child, not the curriculum.

Some places to get ideas for living book titles are mainlesson.com (Yesterday’s Classics), Heritage History, Living Books Curriculum, TruthQuest, All Through The Ages, the SCM bookfinder, and by asking for specific needs here. =)

For Rome, I like the books Detectives in Togas & Mystery of the Roman Ransom, both by Henry Winterfeld. There is slight mention of gods & temples & that sort of thing, but on the whole, it was enjoyable reading. My girls thoroughly enjoyed it.
