How do you teach physical fitness in your school?

The only physical fitness my girls get is bouncing on those bounce balls in our gym, dancing to music, or running around outside. I would love to incorporate physical fitness in our routine and would love any suggestions for exercise DVD’s you enjoy, books that teach exercises for children, etc. I work out in the gym using P90X or run on the treadmill an hour a day,  so I’d like something that they can do on their own.

Can anyone recommend an exercise video that doesn’t have blaring rock music in the background? Tongue out

    Thanks!

Leslie Sansone has easy walking-workouts. I believe she’s Christian.

Sometimes in between subjects, I do quick 5 minute yoga stretching or leg kicks with the kids. Or have them run 10 laps around the house or kitchen. They love it, and it keeps us energized. 🙂

Also, you could try different workouts on Netflix to compare, and/or rotate for variety.

So funny simple home I was about to recommend Leslie Sansone.  I did not know she was a Christian (nice to know).  The video I have was $11 at Walmart and has 1-5 mile walks.  My 2 and 5 yo love to do it right along with meSmile

I have a yoga DVD that I am hoping to use more this winter called Yoga for families. The kids liked it. Pretty easy to do.

I’m looking more into calisthenics  maybe, and not yoga, but thanks! I’ll check out the walking one, but would prefer the jumping around more type stuff. Smile

I’m debating getting this one.  We did day one of the two day trial and my kids enjoyed it.  It didn’t hold their attention for the 30 or more minutes that the program said it would take, but my kids are young (6 and 4) so perhaps slightly older kids would last longer.

    Anyone else tried it?

We dance to the Go Fish Guys’ VBS Backstage with the Bible DVD – if you learn all the dance steps and try to do them along with the kids/singers, it’s a GREAT, really fun workout! HTH.

I invited my girls to join me while I worked out with P90X (Corsogenics) and they enjoyed it though I had to show them how along the way, and plan to have them join me again today. We haven’t been able to get out much with this windy cold weather!

Does anyone wing it and teach their kids to do jumping jacks, pushups, etc for physical fitness? My husband’s not to sure on getting a video, but I need something organized so some days they can just do on their own, since I have my own routine.

I do.  I had a nighbor who also homeschooled and before she transfered to California, we would take our boys to the track at the school and run them around the track.  The track had stations around it where you do balance, pullups, situps, parrallel bars, monkey bars to go across, and a few others that I can’t remember.  We would start at one station, have the boys do what they could (for pullups we did a hang, and on the parrallel bars we just said hold yourself up as long as possible) then run to the next station.  We then brought balls for catch, or kicking, or badmitten raquets and birdies for cordination type activities.  Some days we don’t go to the track and just do the balls and games in our yard.  Trying to teach jumping jacks was pretty funny.  We have younger dc though, mine 6 and 2, hers 8,6, and 2.  They would race and try to best each other so it was fun all around.

You might have to take some time to teach them what you want them to do, then they can excersice on their own while you do your workouts.

My kids liked these a while back.  They’re very good, and the leader is very upbeat, positive.  After a while, however, they got a bit bored…but I think that would happen with any video you do over and over. I need to re-introduce.  Kids of all ages (pre-schoolish to high school) dance with him. http://jjumptothemusic.com/index.php

We’ve used Home School Family Fitness: A Complete Curriculum Guide off and on for years. We also enjoyed the companion video, though it’s not necessary. Blessings, Heather

We do our own thing, kind of like Ruth has,  but not as consistently as we could.  My hubby has them do jumping jacks, sit ups, push ups, etc.  He also teaches them some sports skills, focusing on one at a time.

For example, after their initial warm up type exercises, they’ll focus on just shooting basketball hoops for a few weeks, or maybe they’ll play 4-square for a few weeks.  The most recent was he came home with a croquet set, so after their initial round of exercises, they played croquet for several weeks.  He originally was trying to do more, but it was just frustrating him and the kids, so this is what he has settled on for now and they all seem to like it.  My kids are 10, 9 and 6 btw.

Even though I have to work out on my own for longer work outs, I still work out with my kids. I pick a few different activities and we do them each a few times a week. Right now we go for a jog/walk twice a week (about 2.5-3 miles), we bike twice a week (about 8 miles), and we go to the indoor pool at the senior center once a week to swim laps. They are really enjoying it and it is very good for me! FYI, they range from 9-12. The kids keep an eye out for each other and we just stay on the same trail, so they don’t all have to go the exact same pace or anything like that.
