How do you schedule EFTTC and what do you love about it?

I’m considering using EFTTC2 with my 4th grader but I’m not sure how to best schedule it. I see that each Lesson has several exercises, yet on the SCM Typical Schedule example it is listed as being done twice a week. That seems like a lot for one day, at least for my daughter. How do you schedule EFTTC? Do you take more than one year to do the book?

Also, what do you like most about this book? Is it the gentle approach to composition, or the gentle approach to grammar, or both, neither? What made you choose this book instead of simply copywork, dictation, oral and written narration, and a lot of reading aloud and independently?

I just used Vol 1 with my 3rd grader and he started Vol 2 and will continue that in 4th. We do it twice a week. I do not do all of the lessons or exercises. Mostly I like that it very gently introduces concepts like punctuation, capitalization, letter writing, parts of speech, homonyms, etc. Sometimes we did the lesson orally, which made it easy to do an entire lesson. My son has begun writing out his answers now so what I do is pick and choose the exercises he does. He sets a timer for 15 minutes and works until time is up. If he isn’t finished he works on it during the next time English is scheduled. Some of the exercises, such as the picture narrations, have taken several sessions. We just keep working through it. It really is mostly “copywork, narration, and dictation” in various forms. It’s just nice to have it organized for me.

Ditto to what Tara said. We have written out the exercises, done them orally, skipped a few here and there, discussed the exercises, etc.  My ds is finishing up volume 2 and I plan to use Rod and Staff 5 with him next year.  And, I plan to use vol 1 with my ds7 but not for quite awhile, maybe another year or two.

Thank you, ladies. This is helpful to see how others use it. So smart to use the timer and be done when it goes off and carry on where you are at the next time you do English. 🙂 Thank you!

What is EFTTC? I feel like I should know but I’m drawing a complete blank.
