How do you make God's Design for Science more CM?

Hi! I posted a few days ago with the question can Apologia be counted as nature study? The point of the post was that I wanted to do nature study, but couldn’t figure out how to do that and cover 2 Apologia books in a year. I was trying to fit in more science topics before getting to General Science before 7th grade. Although we really liked Apologia and it was super easy to use it in a CM way, I just don’t want to cram in all in.

Anyway, after getting some really great advice I am thinking about changing course. 😉

After searching thru the boards, I have found that God’s Design for Science by Answers in Genesis seems to be a favorite besides Apologia. I like the looks of it and it seems so simple compared to what we were trying to do. We can get in 1 year what it would have taken 5 Apologia books to cover. I am thinking about using it as a spine since it seems to have shorter readings.

I saw a ton of posts on how the people using it really liked it, but didn’t see too much info on HOW you were using it.

So my question is, how are you using this in a CM way?

I saw that it had discussion questions, but do you skip those and do narrations instead? Do you add living books along side of it? Do you do a science notebook or do the worksheets instead? We were using a blank notebook with lines at the bottom for sketches/written narrations/experiments with Apologia and loved that. I just need for it to be super simple. 🙂

Thanks so much for any advice that you can give.

We did narrate, although I would occasionally ask specific questions to be sure they were understanding something particular.  Very simple questions, like “Describe to me how photosynthesis works”  etc.  There were some fun “thought” questions in the books that we liked.  We really liked the biographies right in the text.   (I usually used this in 3rd grade and up.) We did a few living books, extra experiments.  We did some of the activity pages, especially if they related to an experiment, and skipped the dumb ones.  We did not do any kind of special notebook.  We just saved pages from the experiments that we did.

We will begin God’s Design for Life in August. I will do like Bookworm and find some living books to read along with it. I will also use some of the activity pages, and do extra hands-on activities when possible. The Plants and Animals book will be good nature study guides as well. I will not spend much time in the human body book since we have covered some of that already. But, we will take our time going through the other books so that we can branch out with living books and activities. I may have my daughter do a notebook similar to what we have done in the past in Heart of Dakota, writing a Scripture verse and drawing a picture. Those are just some ideas I have.
