I wanted to combine SCM History Modules 2 & 3 – Ancient Greece & Ancient Rome – for 3rd grade. How would you do that? Do both modules at the same time, or one then the other? I think that there are difficulties with either, but my plan is to give the kids a general idea, then when they are older we can dig in much deeper. Any ideas or suggestions?

I would do one, then the other, myself….

If I were combining for a 3rd grader, I would take 2 90 day terms for each culture.

I would read a comprehensive spine like “The Story of the Greeks” and add a couple of books like “Our Little Athenian Cousin from Long Ago” and Our Little Spartan Cousin from Long Ago” and “Life in Ancient Greece” and perhaps the Ancient Greece coloring book by John Greene from Dover.

For Rome, I would do the same 90 day term, and read “The Story of the Romans” as our spine. Then add in “Our Little Roman Cousin From Long Ago” and “Our Litttle Carthaginian Cousin From Long Ago”. Again, you can add other books like Growing Up in Ancient Rome and the Roman coloring book by John Greene from Dover.

The coloring books have a bit of nudity (like the gymnasium scene) but are easily corrected by you with a quick preview.

There are books for younger kids about the art from that period by Susie Hodge (on Amazon). Those are good for a quick view. You can easily add in the new Stuff They Left Behind portfolio as well.

The chapters on the spine books are short and it is easy to read a couple at a time. The additional books would be optional.
