    Hello!

My DD soon to be 9 absolutely LOVES horses.  I was thinking about doing a horse theme for gifts for Christmas or her birthday.  We have most of the Marguerite Henry books.  Do you have any other recommendation for books?  I am interested in stories, books about identifying the breeds, the anatomy of a horse, raising/caring for/training a horse, horse activity books, puzzles, games, picture books, pictures, movies, etc.  What about the Young Riders (I think that is what it is called) magazine?  Is it good or is  there another horse magazine that would be good?  I’m not sure where exactly to start with my looking. So, anything that y’all have enjoyed would be great.

    Thanks!!

Dd13 has been horse crazy since age 5 when she took up riding. She subscibes to Young Rider, Equus, and Horse Illustrated and loves all 3. She also enjoyed a trilogy of books called Gabriel’s Horses by Allison Hart, the Billy & Blaze series (beginner reading) by c.w. Anderson and The Phantom Stallion series (these are a bit twaddle u, but she liked them). Oh the Ralph Moody books aren’t about horses but have a lot of horses in them as does the Mr. Tucket series by Gary Paulsen. A mini calendar with horses makes a good stocking stuffer.

Hi, my dd 12 is super horse crazy too! I just read her your question and she recommended Black Beauty, the Ultimate Horse Book by Elwyn Hartley Edwards (this is a DK book and has a bit of evolution in it at the very beginning, but she just ignores those pages). It has a lot of information in it with LOTS of photography of real horses in order to illustrate. She also said that the Album of Horses is very good as well and something that a 9 year old would enjoy. It is written by Marguerite Henry but isn’t one of the novel type books. It has lovely illustrations and goes through many breeds of horses through stories and information given in a conversational tone. Also, draw 50 Horses or maybe an art video series on drawing horses. My dd really learned a lot from a video we borrow from our library teaching how to draw horses, it is a lot of fun for her. If I think of anything else, I’ll let you know. Oh, she has also really enjoyed herself with collecting and playing with models of horses. Breyer and Schleich both make accurate and lovely models of horses. Breyer’s are much larger scale in size and are often models of specific famous horses whereas the schleich ones are more just accurate models of an entire breed. Maybe you could get her a model of her favourite type of horse as well?

Have a good time looking through horse ideas! I always do!

    Christie,

What ages would you say your recommendations are suited for, particularily the magazines?  I’m looking for the 16- 18 age range.

Magazines – Young Rider is geared younger, I would say 14 and under. The others are appropriate for adults even.

We have multiple horse reference books including DK one and an Equine Veterinary Encylopedia. Dd preferred schleich horses to Breyer and still has all of hers and her wooden barn. She takes them out to play with the younger kids. My dd also enjoyed all of the books from Beautiful Feet’s horse study, but skipped the curriculum guide even though we had it.

Dd took an Animal Care Science class with Landry Academy a couple years ago. She’s currently taking Equine Health with Landry and loves it.

    Happy shopping.
