Anyone with Horizons math experience?  I would like feedback.  Also, is the teacher’s guide really necessary in levels 1-2?

It has been wonderful for son, who needs a spiral technique to move the math concepts into long term memory. He was very nervous about it all at first and he complained and fought it and I tried Ray’s, I tried Mammoth Math, and finally he decided that Horizons was the best for him. He has shown great progress. I do not follow the teacher’s guide. I tried a few times, but the lesson they plan would take 2 hours a day and if I did half a lesson per day, then it would take 2 years to get through and there just isn’t that many new concepts!! So, I do the daily worksheet and I review it with him and for any new concept, I have him watch a video that teaches the concept off of Kahn Academy. I then help him through a few practice ones and answer any questions etc. I allow up to 45 minutes for math and he is usually done in 20-30, so I let him play math games on the computer that Iget off of allinonehomeschool.com and he looks at those as reward. His sister usually takes 30-45 to finishe her math so it works good for us. HTH Oh and my daughter liked his worksheets so much that she is doing TT, but asked to do his Horizon worksheets too on her own for review. So, of course, I allow it!! LOL She will usually get in a game most days too, but they are not her favorite.

I will give him the section test and if he gets everything right, then I will move him on and if he misses anything, then I have him complete that section, but will let him do 3 or half of certain concepts if he passed that concept on the test. Again, this just gives him motivation for really learning and mastering the concepts and not just learning how to do it for the worksheet that day.

For my daughter and her review, I just have her do what she wants each day, but she has to do at least one from each concept so I don’t feel I wasted my money on the workbook.

1-2 you can do them quicker in your head than looking up the answers in my opinion, so I wouldn’t buy the teacher’s guide for those grades. Even 3rd grade is iffy for me, but higher up, yeah. I do like doing the math myself though because it makes me better too and I know I need to be able to keep up with them as they get older LOL.

He chose to stay with Horizons this year even though I had TT3 from daughter last year and she decided to do both again this year, so she will do TT4 and Horizons 3 for review.

My son was in ps for 1st and my daughter for 2nd. They have progressed leaps and bounds from where they were when I pulled them.
