I might homeschool others’ kids for profit along with my two in the fall. Does anyone have any experience with this? How much should I charge (on a low end)? I have a CA teacher’s credential.  I already use CM methods for my homeschooling, using some SCM materials.

Be sure you check out laws in your state first!  You don’t want to do something that can come back on you in legal issues down the road.  (I’m not in CA so I can’t help you with knowing legalities.)

If it is legal then you have to figure out what they pay for (materials, supplies, food for the kids you’ll have to feed during the day, books/curricula, admission prices for field trips) on top of how much you get paid.  Also you need when you get paid figured out.  Having done daycare out of my home once upon a time I would suggest that whatever the pay is, you get it in advance each month and don’t accept late payments.  If they haven’t paid they can’t bring their kids to you to teach.  Exceptions lead to a whole host of issues….

Also, set up rules for illness (YOURS and theirs).

I homeschooled another child for one semester a few years ago. It was not the best experience in our case. The other child was completely different from my family and his presence changed the whole atmosphere of our home. I was very thankful when summer time came and I turned down the parents’ request to continue for the next year.

The only way I would every homeschool someone else’s child again is if we had a lot in common with the other family and agreed on our educational philosophy.

Oh thanks. That is helpful to know. I have been thinking of the disruption of our family’s way of life aspect a bit, too.
