There is a homeschool convention coming to town soon and I’m trying to decid whether to go or not. I am not going to use a boxed curriculum set like Sonlight, etc. I plan to use SCM to guide me. (Obviously I am just starting.) this is a big convention but about an hour and a half away. I would probably drive back and forth. I can’t decide whether it’s worth my time and money or not. Thoughts?

I’m planning to go to the one in May.  Not sure if that’s the one you’re talking about.  I’d say if you’re set on your curriculum and that’s the only reason you’d be going is to look at curriculum, then don’t waste the money.  However, if you are going for the classes/ speakers then it may be worth your time.  I am set on my curriculum as well, but Voddie Baucham and Ken Ham are going to be there this year and I don’t want to miss out!!  So, I’d say it depends on your motivation.  Hope this helps!

This one is in SC in March. I don’t see Voddie Baucom as a speaker but I do see Ken Ham and Jeanne Fullbright. I don’t know who they are though so I’ll research that. Thanks for the insight! I do like classes but I don’t know the speakers listed so not sure if the classes are of interest…

Ken Ham has the Creation Museum in KY, and he’s an author of many, many books disproving evolution.  If you have a chance to see him, GO!!!  😀  Jeannie Fulbright wrote the Apologia science books that SCM uses in their plan.  At least the lower grades.  I haven’t looked at the older grades too closely yet.  🙂

I have a friend in SC.  I’ll have to see if she’s going to this convention.  I think she’d love to see Ken Ham!

Thanks for the link.  She knew exactly what I was talking about.  😛  She hopes to be able to go, but not sure yet.  I’ll post the link on my forum, anyway, for any other SC HS’ers lurking over there.

Since you have a forum they may be interested in one of the other conferences as well. There are four total: Greenville, SC, Cincinatti, OH, Philadelphia, PA, and Memphis, TN. Here is the link to all four including dates:

I am going to make a two hour drive in May to compare some math programs I’m looking at. Also, I know what curriculum I’m going to buy, so I will save on shipping and can see it in my hands. I didn’t go last year and now I wish I had.

If you have a chance to go to one of these regional conventions you should go!  This is the first year they are doing this and I think they are going to be amazing – our closest one is 12 hours away, so I’m not going, but if it were within three hours I’d be there… maybe even four!

The price is GREAT!!!  Our state convention is $60 (which I think it totally outrageous because of how small it is).  So for $30 you’re getting a LOT of bang for your buck.  Don’t take your credit card – just bring a set budget, have a plan on what vendor booths you want to shop at so you don’t overspend.  Whatever you save on shipping by buying AT the convention is usually outweighed by what you impulse buy, so you may want to consider not bringing any spending money at all (unless you’ve done enough research ahead of time and really need a handwriting curriculum and then you can see two or three in person there and decide on the one you would be most likely to put to good use.

Plan on taking lots of great notes and being encouraged – wish I could go!

I also encourage you to go.  It is such a learning experience.  I saw Jeane Fullbright and it is worth it to go just to go to her sessions.  That is good advice about sticking to your budget in the vendor hall.  You may get a lot of ideas there and then buy used later.

Would it be feasible to take my almost 3 year old DS with me?

The one I go to doesn’t allow strollers, which is why I could not go last year. My youngest was three last May and would have been all over the place. All I would have done was chase her. I think it depends on the child. My oldest would have been fine at any age. If I were to bring my youngest, I wouldn’t be able to look around like I want to.

In our almost 10 years of homeschooling, we’ve never been to a convention. I’m sure you would be very uplifted and encouraged by the speakers. However, its very easy to doubt your current curriculum choices and CM way, when presented with all the other flashy curriculums that will be at the convention. If you plan on following the SCM guide, the All Day Charlotte Mason Seminar might be of great benefit.
