Okay all of you seasoned CMers, here’s a question for yah…

I’m wondering what makes a study of history alive and CM style?

I have to admit that I’ve been looking at and considering purchasing a history curriculum (MOH to be exact)because I’ve been worrying about history retention. I keep wondering whether or not just reading living books and recording in a book of centuries will be enough. What do you think? This is what I’m considering to use as we head into our study of the middle ages… either….

    1.Mystery of History

    or

    2. SCM history curriculum guide suggestions, TruthQuest History and Guerber book

I would love to hear what you all think as I trust you here and love you much. 😉

I have used all of these. I do not consider MOH as CM. Yes, it is short and it is written to the child but I think it is way dumb downed in order to be considered CM.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE SCM history guides. It has been such a blessing in our family. Truthquest is good if you want just a guide. It does have some commentary and a list of books you can read but I think SCM is better only because the commentaries go with the books listed in the curriculum.

Guerber is great to add into any curriculum for family read alouds or older independent reading.

    JMHO!

    Hey Shanna,

Guess I should have clarified that we have been using Truthquest and SCM curriculum guide for a couple of years now.

We’ve loved all the living books; but somehow, I always end up getting into this cycle of second guessing ~ about half way through the year. Does anyone else experience this?

Its good to hear what you’ve liked. Maybe we should just stick with our “tried and true” – if it’s not broke, why try to fix it, right?

Thanks a bunch and so glad to know you here. 🙂

    Heather,

I think it is important to reevaluate what you use to make sure it is best for your family. But, I know that I mess up so much and buy unneeded things during that mid-year cycle. Something new is always fun best it is not always best of God’s will for us.

If you are enjoying what you are using and so are your children…I say stick with it.
