I am having trouble finding a good, engaging writing course to teach high school writing that our daughter will truly enjoy and be able to find interesting topics to write about.  Does anyone have any suggestions that have worked well for you and also fit into your CM education or a CM blend with classical Christian education?  Actually, just a great resource that teaches good writing skills for essays, research papers, (and creative writing would be a plus, too,) and that is not complicated or time consuming to open and use as well as offering good sample writings written by other students would be great.  I appreciate any help any of you can offer!

I too, would love to see responses to the inquiry above for the CM style High School writing. Thanks!

    Blessings,

There is a brand new product by the woman who wrote the middle school Jump In.  I haven’t tried it out yet (definitely will be when my next one finishes Jump In) but based on how well I like it, it looks like a sure bet to me.  Link:

My dream is to own the Institute for Excellence in Writing program. Its so expensive but we’re hoping to pick that up this year for writing. I attended a class with the writer, Pudewa at homeschool conference and I love how it all lays out and sounds. So much better than any other writing program I’ve heard about, researched or seen.

I found a used set of IEW Teaching Writing Structure and Style DVD and workbook and watched it and can now resell it for what I paid for it. We can use the theme based writing books, Student Writing Intensive (with DVDs for students to follow) or do writing lessons that go along with our other subjects, which is what it is meant to do. Writing should not be another subject, but should be integrated with other subjects. I am so happy to have found this program! You should check out their website and buy used. They also have a yahoo group you could join.

Have you looked at Epi Kardia yet? It is recommended by several ladies on this forum.

If you cannot find IEW used, I can tell you from experience that it is worth the full price.

For those who’ve used the IEW, how long did it take your, say 9th grader, to go through the DVD and workbook?

I used the DVDs for myself to learn the method in order to teach it to my children. I’ve used the theme based writing lessons with my children. I use it in a co-op situation on Mondays. We meet from 1-3pm, but at times finish early. That just gets us started. They spend 30 minutes to and hour two to three times more during the week to complete a paper. Some assignments are spread out over more than one week. They build on each other when a longer, or more complicated paper is assigned. The first year you use it, I’m guessing it would take them longer than after a year under their belts. That said, the assignment requirements increase each year, so the time may be about the same, but possibly less for a diligent student.

Essentials in Writing is one that caught my attention earlier this month.

I have been reading the online samples at amazon from the program Bookworm has suggested and so far it looks good! It looks like something my ds would enjoy, which is a plus.

    Just wanted to share.

We use IEW. At first I was intimidated by it. But once I got to see it in action (at coop we were attending at the time) I decided to try it at home. I love that I can use the technique with all we do. It is awesome! We also use Teaching The Classic/Adam & Missy Andrews. Love that you use IEW and TTC with all you do in teaching. 🙂
