Well, I finally have one in high school. I am at a lost as to what to do for science. We tried Apologia and it was not a fit for us. My daughter is not really into science. She wants to be an accountant, but I want her to have a well rounded education. Apologia was just too much!!! Looking for alternatives that will still give her a good solid education with labs without such depth in the reading. When she doesn’t like a topic, she struggles with reading too much. Trying to find a resource that gives a brief description of each idea/topic with well planned, thorough experiments. We are looking to do chemistry this year, but am open to other topics if necessary. I would like to find a series that will have biology, physics, and chemistry that we can work through for her high school education. Thanks in advance for any ideas. Staci

Still reading but in a different way – or perhaps more accurately – style:

This year, my high schooler is doing Friendly Chemistry along with some additional books and she is really enjoying it. I shared what we are doing in this thread:

Mrs. K – What do you recommend for Biology and Physics for high school? Like the Friendly Chemistry! Curious what you use/used for the other fields! Thanks!

It is expensive, but Super Charged Science is great. The online version is done at your own pace. Little reading or studying and Aurora Lipper, NASA rocket scientist, goes through lesson in video of different experiements, so even if student doesn’t like doing all the experiements, There are videos as well so you can see, & hear results. You choose which ones to do or not. It is broken  down into 11-13 different categories, so easy to just cover one section per semester etc… Student should be able to do on their own with her instructions. HTH  I will do when mine are older, but at 7 & 8, it required me to do everything while they watched, but they would spend a good hour watching her experiement videos. We did a bit on rocketry and I invited some friends over and we did about 4 experiements that day in 2 hours and it was a blast. Cost to me for 6 people was about $10.

    schannel,

We haven’t done Physics yet so I can’t recommend anything on that. Physics is coming up next year. 🙂

For Biology, we did Apologia. And I was glad to be done with it. 🙂 I know there are many who do like them. But we just didn’t care for it. I will share what we did with it though. I had her read and narrate. We didn’t do all the On Your Own questions. In addition, I did not have her do the study guides and Apologia tests. I made my own CM-style tests using more open-ended type questions. And I also didn’t have her learn ALL of the vocabulary. Some modules just have way too many vocabulary words. So I picked out the ones I thought were the most important. Then I did include those on the tests I made. I also did try to include some videos to enhance the study as well. We also did some lab work.

    Hope that helps!

Mrs. K. – do you have any recommendations for Biology that are more along the lines of Friendly Chemistry? We HATED Apologia the last time we did it – not a fit for us! Thanks.

    schannel,

I’m sorry…but since we used Apologia for biology, I really can’t make any recommendations. Have you looked under the science category here on the forum? I’m pretty sure there’s been some discussions here about various Biology programs.

Have any of you used Queen’s upper level science courses?

I shared some links in another recent thread called something like “Alternatives to Apologia”… something like that… Anyway, just thought I would mention here the link to a blog written by a homeschooled high school graduate who enjoyed a very CM science experience for Biology and Chemistry:

As an aside, I am currently reading Microbe Hunters by Paul de Kruif, and I would certainly recommend that you consider including this in your child’s reading list as it brings the scientists and their work to life!

    Blessings!

I read the blog post. Great ideas.

Still wondering if others have used Sandy Queen’s highschool level science. Will begin another thread.
