I am making a switch from a more classical style to the CM.  My children used the Shurley Method through 7th grade. I looked at the Analytical Grammar (I think that is what it is called) and really liked it, but I really don’t want to spend that much.  My children are in 9th and 8th this upcoming year.  Any alternative suggestions that will fit with the CM style?  Thanks!

I’ve not used them, but I’ve heard lots of nice things about Sandi Queen’s Language Lessons. You can peruse them at Queenhomeschool.com.

I use Our Mother Tongue by Nancy Wilson in about 8th grade.  I think it is very amenable to being used in concert with CM methods.  Despite its being considered “classical” in style, it is not at all overbearing, the exercises are not  unnecessarily long, and the whole is accompanied by little stories and definitions that are a lot of fun.  We combine this with some extra diagramming reinforcement and foreign language instruction, which is actually one of the very best ways to learn English grammar IMO.  It’s really hard to figure out how to translate a gerund or a subjunctive phrase unless you know what they are first, lol.  I remember a certain amount of the grammar I learned in school, mostly the fun stuff like diagramming, but an awful lot of what I recall I actually learned in French class, and needed it to be able to express myself in French.
