I too have had some difficulty planning. I’m using the CM Organizer, which I LOVE! But after we finish a resource or book, I find myself trudging back to the library, trying to find what we can study next. We’ve got a pretty good hold on reading, math, spelling and writing, but after that…nothin’. I don’t even know where to start with history or science and it’s so stinking hot, we haven’t done any nature walks. I did find two books about the human body today that are age-appropriate for my 5.5 year old. So, we’re starting there with science, I guess. It’s not the scheduling I have trouble with; it’s the planning. Once I know what I want to use, I can schedule it almost immediately. I just don’t know what to look for! It overwhelms me so much to look at months and months of empty space on a calendar and know that I have to fill it w/ SOMETHING; I just don’t know what! Any help??

Lindsey, perhaps you could plan out a rough structure of what you would like to accomplish. I know that, for me, I need to know where I’m going next with the children, not just what we’re doing now. That way, I can get ahead with the library loans and have time in case we need to order something or get it interlibrary. The curriculum guide can help you with the ‘what’ to teach. As for science, one fun thing to do is go through the days of creation. I know that Lifetime Books and Gifts has their science catalog split up that way and so it would be easy to use that as a guide. Even if the library does not have that specific title, it is a guide. One more thought: have you taken a look at Sonya’s CM Planning book? I used it even after 15 years of homeschooling and it was quite helpful.

We did a series of articles on planning last year that might be helpful. There are links to all the articles in the series at the bottom of each part.

I would also heartily recommend the “Planning Your CM Education”.  This is my first year homeschooling and I found it extremely helpful for long term and day to day planning.
