    Hi,

Just a quick note:  I have a 16 yr., 14 yr olf (with mental health issues) and 11 year old twins.  I have been here before, and left-WHY, I don’t know!!  I tried TOG, and knew after a few weeks that I just couldn’t or didn’t want to do it.  Sonlight is o.k. but something is missing.  AND my 14 year old needs help, so I want to include her now with the 11 year olds.

We have studied the Revolutionary War several times, so i want to start after that.  But that would be at the end of module 5.  Should I do the end of module 5-just jump in where we are at?  Or do we miss that short time period and start with module 6.

Could really use some wisdome for you all-I know we are not to envy, but I do envy all here who have found simplicity in their curriculums!!

    Hi Pam. Welcome back! =)

As your children are older, I would suggest jumping in where you are since this Module covers high school credit requirements (specifically American History) if you are in the states.

If you really want to feel like you are getting a fresh start and make everyone “feel” the difference, be sure to keep the lessons short and sweet. Add in a documentary or two for fun. Relax and enjoy it. =)

Yep, I agree with Sheraz, jump in where you have left off. Short lessons, and the wide variety of subjects will liven things up pretty quickly! Personally, I would not be afraid to start more simply with all the kids, and then over time, depending on how much they (and you!) need to decompress from their previous school experiences, adjust things to their age/grade levels over time. For your older kids this may mean doing some extra days at the end of the year in order to cover what is needed for high school credits, etc. but to me this would be well worth it!

Hi, Pam. I haven’t been on here long, but I wanted to chime in because my kids are such similar ages to yours, and our situation is too!  My children are 16, 15, 13 and 11.  My 15 y/o daughter has issues too, possibly including Asperger’s Syndrome (two of her siblings have it also).  We are doing CM for the first time this year, and are all going through a real adjustment period.  It’s been very good being able to adapt what we’re doing to meet their needs.  8 weeks into the school year (we start in July so we can take breaks all through the year) and I’m seeing improvement in narration skills, attention, and attitudes in all my children — though there’s still some work needed in all those areas!

We are following SCM’s Module 5 this year, and I’m loving it.  If we’d had early American history recently, though, I’d have just picked up where we left off, as the other posters have recommended.  I’ve had to tweak things a little — allowing the children to read books a little below the level listed for their grades, and substituting one book for my dd 15 because she absolutely hated the one recommended (her brother is reading the recommended book and likes it just fine).  She’s doing much better with the new book.  So much of this seems like trial and error, but this year really is already much better than years we’ve had in the past, and I know we’re on the right track.

Blessings as you start down this road!

    Tara
