    Hello moms,

I am very new to CM and I am trying to find out what each module covers. I see the book list and I know Sonya said she is on a 6 year rotation, but where do I start? I have a 4th grader,1st/2nd grader and a ready to read 4 year old. I would like to combine subjects. We already covered The Story of the World 1 & 2 so I don’t want to repeat those same topics again this year. I am feeling a little overwhelmed since this method is different from the classical approach. HELP!!

Well, I don’t know what is covered in Story of the World 1&2…..

But here is the summary of the modules, and then you can select one, look at the details, and even download a generous sample!  http://simplycharlottemason.com/planning/scmguide/history-modules-overview/

    In short

    Module 1 – Ancient Egypt

    Module 2 – Ancient Greece

    Module 3 – Ancient Rome

    Module 4 – Middle Ages / Renaisannce

    Module 5 – Early Modern

Module 6 – Modern to present.

Whichever module you pick, you would put all your kids in at the same point.

You would buy the Family Books, and do those together.  Assuming your kids are at about grade level skills, you would get the grade 4-6 books for your 4th grader to read on their own, and the grade 1-3 books to read to your 1-2 grader, and you could have your 4yo listen in on any of the grade 1-3 books they are interested in.

With the Guide, it telss you for each day of school which chapters in which books to read.  They are very well laid out.

    hope this helps!

Suzukimom explained it all well. I second buying the handbook that tell what to do each day…really simplifies our day!!

FWIW, our family has quite a bit of classical and cm background. (I’ve gone back and forth over the years.). CM feels more true to life and lends itself to a “home” feel versus the “svhoolish” feel of the classical model. This year was our first to use an SCM guide. We used Module 4 as we’d covered US history with CC the prior year. I want the topics 1, 2, 3 to be covered in highschool for my now 13yos. I will most likely have the three modules do a bit of overlapping. Just trying to say that it won’t matter if you end the rotation at another point other than Module 6. The guides are thorough. I will continue to use them for my children other than the years we study Texas History. I am working on that for this year and laying it out very similar in fashion to the SCM guides.

You’ll enjoy the simplicity of having everyone “on the same page” even as they use different books.
