I am looking to get this book for my 12 yo ds for Christmas.  If you have read this book or would recommend one from this series for a mature 12yo, please share.

I’m thinking he may like to receive these books as gifts throughout the years before he leaves the nest.

    TIA

We LOVED this story! I have a 9,7 and 4 year old. We also loved Helen’s Temper, and Jessica’s First Prayer. We love everything that we have read from Lamplighter. These are wonderful books and a great addition to your family library. They have such good character building stories! My daughter loved Helen’s Temper and it opened her eyes to many things! The book really touched her and allowed her to see things from a spiritual stand point. These are such great books I can’t tell you just how much we love Lamplighters!

Do you think Hedge of Thorns would be “old” enough for a mature 12yo boy??  The age range says it’s for 12-99 or 14-99, something like that.  He has liked the audios that we have listened to and I’m not sure what the age range is for those ones, but I want to get him a real book (not audio) for Christmas to start a collection of his own.  I may start the same with my other boys but not just yet.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.

Yes, Hedge of Thorns, is a terrific book for his age – adult. It is short at ~85 pages, but the story is profound. It is all about God’s protection and what happens when we choose to stray from it. I highly recommend this and ALL lamplighter books! All of the books they’ve made into audio dramas are terrific, too, and suitable for his age. Sir Malcolm and the Missing Prince and A Peep Behind the Scenes are two of my favorites as audio and regular book. However, my all-time favorite books are Ishmael, Self Raised and The Hidden Hand – all lamplighter’s and geared to teen- adult. You really can’t go wrong with any of these books.

    Blessings,

I too agree with the others!! You just can’t go wrong with the Lamplighter books. Hedge of thorns was one of the first ones we bought, we read it aloud as a family and really enjoyed it. My dd has asked for more of these books for her own collection! The one she is wanting now is The Basket of Flowers.  I hope you enjoy them as much as we have!!

    God Bless,

Thanks ladies.  We do have a couple of the audiobooks but I think that my son would really appreciate a bound book to start a collection, my other kids possibly, too, but especially him.

I agree that you can’t really go wrong, but with his age, I was curious if this one would be appropriate for him.  But, like I think we all agree, you can’t really go wrong with any of them, can you??

    Thanks again.

I agree we too have loved hedge of thorns and use the analogy from it often when talking with our boys. Lamplighter is having a sale coming up very soon too.
