Over the summer I purchased the 1st grade workbook for HWOT for my DD.  Since she was in private school K last year I wanted to take some time to review the letters first before starting the book.  I had a friend tell me she just buys the workbook and does not use the teacher’s manual, so that is all I purchased.  Well, we’ve reviewed several uppercase letters, but now that we are getting to the last of the capitals (going in the order of HWOT) I am starting to think I should have just purchased the K book to review so that I could teach using their cute phrases and songs.

So, I need advice.  What all should I purchase?  I’m thinking I’ll need the teacher’s manual to learn the lingo.  Should I get the music CD?  I am a musician, so if the songs are in the teacher’s book I can read them and sing them.  I don’t mind making a purchase that can be reused since I have two younger boys that will use it later.  Also, since I have the 1st grade printing book will I need the teacher’s manual to go with it?  Will I need extra pages for practicing words, like copywork, down the road?

I’ve always only used the student books…didn’t even know they had cute songs:)  Gina

I don’t use the teacher’s manuals either.  I have the student workbooks, the wooden capital pieces plus mat, and a chalkboard.  I do have the CD, which is cute, but I’ve never been good about using it.  The songs and music are not listed in the books (I think…it’s been years since I had the teacher’s manuals because I sold them when I realized I didn’t need them).

You can find free printouts for the paper online if you don’t want to use their special (and expensive) paper.  After a while of using the HWOT paper my boys transition to wide-ruled paper without too much trouble.

Yay!  Thank you all!  I figured out that I can use the A+ sheet to finish off our capitals like C, S, G, etc. that start differently than the traditional letters, and then the 1st grade book will pick up the lower case letters.  I won’t have to buy anything right now. Laughing I may get the wooden pieces and such for my preschooler later, but I’m glad I don’t have to bother making a big purchase right now.

We just used workbooks also.  In fact, we just used the K workbook and did copy work from then on.  My oldest son has beautiful handwriting, and my second son has fair/nice handwriting.  I’ll use this same method with each of them.

Since we are on the subject of handwriting, I have a couple of questions.  My son will be 5 in a couple of months and I will do a kinder year starting next fall.  I have not done any formal letter writing or instruction.  When do I know he is ready for instruction?  Also, when do you introduce lined paper?

    Blessings,

    Carolyn
