  • Anyone used any of the Handwriting Without Tears products? I am particularly interested in their early and pre writing tools, the wooden letter blocks, chalkboards, etc.

Also, anyone used their workbooks as a part of copywork? Do their products compliment the CM method?

I used the first 3 books with my dd. She is very kinesthetic and was adopted, so we had behavioral issues, too. By the time she was ready, I think I could’ve skipped the wooden blocks. However, the stamp and trace screen and the small chalkboard (and advice about the length of a writing utensil) were excellent for her and due to her visual sensory issues and developmental delays, the workbooks and style (she’s also a lefty) were wonderful. She went through 3 books in 2 years, then I did a year of HWT style Presidential Penmanship from Zeezok publ. (age 8), as copywork.

I don’t like the HWT cursive and she wanted to change style last year, so she started writing in D’Nealian on her own and in DN cursive this year. So yes, it was successful, I think; she didn’t develop a dislike for writing like my son did and he used A Reason for Handwriting.

It’s very CM friendly, in that the lessons are very short. About 5 min. and we were finished.

We also use these to begin with and I love them.  The kids (all boys) never felt stressed about writing.  It’s easy to follow, little pictures and doesn’t “appear” to be much work.  though I always felt it was a nice amount.  Like Rachel only about 5 minutes!
