    Hello.

My 8 year old has trouble with pencil grip and handwriting. He is a very good reader and speller (for example he will read the Hobbit in his spare time.) His fine motor skills don’t seem to hold him back for working with toys (such as K’nex). We have worked a bit on it, and he has made some improvement. My conundrum is he is intellectually ready for Using Language Well (and a little incentive is our state does test on language mechanics, which we have done poorly on while I postponed former grammar lessons, as I agree with CM general guidance). How do we start if his handwriting is not ready for such long copy work?

My seven year old is in a similar situation. I finally just let him use the grip he was most comfortable with and little by little it is getting better on it’s own. We also do plenty of tracing practice for longer passages and are just working on his actual hand writing at the pace he can handle. Some days he happily does quite a bit and other days it is just a little but we are just keeping at it.
