I need help. My 10 year old daughter writes very neatly for copywork, but all of her writing for anything else is a mess. She also does well with capitalization and punctuation if I tell her to specifically do those things, but she doesn’t apply these things in her day to day writing. I really don’t understand why. I am open to any suggestions.

viljoenavenueMemberI dont have a 10 year old daughter, but she should know that you expect her to write neatly and do all punctuation at all times not only during copywork. Sorry I cant be of better help.
LyndaFParticipantIt may help you to know that my daughter is autistic. I am open to any suggestions.
viljoenavenueMemberYes, lol….I guess that would make a difference. Um, I know sonya shafer has an autistic girl….maybe you could ask her and see what she does? if she has introduced handwritting? I would have no idea.
simple homeMemberMy dd 8 is not autistic, but she does the same thing with neat copy work, but sloppy in her own work. I don’t think she means to be sloppy, but it is hard for her to not have the lines that guide how it should look. I think it takes time to be able to perfect it on their own.
Sonya ShaferModeratorHi, Lynda. Sounds like your daughter is ahead of mine. My 13yo autistic daughter is still doing beginning copywork to build up her fine muscle control. She rarely writes any other time.
Here’s an idea:
Back off on the amount of writing and emphasize the habit of careful work, beginning with very short lessons. So, for example, if she usually writes a paragraph sloppily, tell her she will need to write only one sentence today but she must do it right. If she takes her time and is careful to write neatly and with good punctuation, she will have to write that sentence only once. If she does sloppy work, she will have to recopy it until it is neat and correct. As she develops that habit of careful work, you can gradually lengthen the lesson/assignment. It will take more time in the beginning, but hopefully it will establish a lifelong habit.
Do you think something like that would work with your daughter?
